Minnesota vs Boston University Picks, Predictions, and Odds Tonight

Minnesota and Boston University meet for the first time this season in Frozen Four action, with both sides possessing some serious firepower. However, our picks believe Minnesota is too much to handle for BU.

The Frozen Four is set to take place in Tampa, Florida and the four teams participating have a ton of talent on their respective rosters. The first game will be between the Boston University Terriers and the Minnesota Golden Gophers, two of the best teams in the country.

The Gophers are seeking their first National Championship since 2003, and the Terriers hope to get their first title since their epic comeback against Miami University of Ohio in 2009.

Minnesota is heavily favored, but for good reason. These two teams have not faced each other this season so there will be a feeling-out process, but this game is going to be electric.

Minnesota vs Boston University picks and predictions

Minnesota is one of the best offensive teams in the country thanks to their two Hobey Baker finalists, Matthew Knies and Logan Cooley. They also have another stud in Jimmy Snuggerud, who could have easily been considered for College Hockey’s most prestigious award.

These three have starred for the Gophers all season, led by Cooley's 20-goal, 57-point season — good for second most in the entire country. Snuggerud is currently fifth in the nation with 21 goals and 29 assists, while Knies is 19th, providing 21 goals and 20 assists.

Minnesota is averaging 4.21 goals per game, the second highest in all of Division I. Not only is it incredibly gifted offensively at 5-on-5, but it also has the fourth-best power play in the nation — converting at 26.36%.

There is no doubt that Minny is the better team in this matchup, but BU is not a team to sleep on by any means. The Terriers are ranked fifth in the nation and average 3.90 goals per game.

They are led by Lane Hutson, the outstanding Freshman blue liner that has tallied 15 goals and 33 assists in 38 games, and has led all of Hockey East in scoring during in-conference games — tallying nine genos and 25 assists in 24 games. Senior Matt Brown has had an excellent season as well for the Terriers, producing 16 goals with 30 assists in 38 games.

Top to bottom, Minnesota is certainly the better team not only offensively and defensively, but also in the special teams department. Give me the Gophers to win by multiple.

My best bet: Golden Gophers -1.5  (+135 at BetMGM)

Minnesota vs Boston University moneyline analysis

There is no denying all signs point toward the Golden Gophers in this matchup, but let’s talk about the goaltending battle. Justen Close will be getting the nod for Minnesota and he has had a phenomenal season, sporting a record of 25-9-1 with a 1.99 GAA and a .928 SV%. He has only allowed three goals in the two NCAA tournament games.

In goal for the Terriers is going to be the Junior, Drew Commesso who is 24-7-0 on the season with a 2.41 GAA and a .914 SV%. He hasn’t been as good as Close, but by no means has he been bad.

The Gophers are just a much scarier team than BU with much more firepower. They have the better power play, penalty kill, offense, defense, and goaltending. This is their game to lose.

Minnesota vs Boston University Over/Under analysis

There are always a ton of nerves in the first game of the Frozen Four, and since these teams haven’t played one another yet this season, there will certainly be a feeling out process early on in this game, I don’t expect either team to be so aggressive right out of the gate.

Both of these programs are offensively gifted, but they are also solid in their own end and have excellent goaltenders as the last line of defense.

Each team is allowing less than three goals per game and with the magnitude of this battle, it should be a very tight, defensive game. I’d lean toward the Under.
