Chicago White Sox vs Cleveland Guardians Prediction – Free MLB Pick

The Guardians impressed me by winning last night’s series opener with the White Sox 3-0. Not only were they at the usual disadvantage of being off the Sunday Night Game, but they’d actually played a doubleheader in New York on Sunday, losing both games. Now all three games in NY had been decided by one run, so Cleveland was probably due to some positive regression. No team has more one-run losses this season than the Guardians (13), so a case can be made that this team is perhaps slightly better than its overall record (21-26). Regardless, I like them to beat the White Sox again tonight.
Chicago is a team I certainly have little affinity for, as they are a bottom-three team in baseball in run differential (-57) and have just seven road wins all season. They came into this series “flying high” after winning five of six, including a three-game sweep of the Royals, but all of that came at home. They did take two of three from Cleveland as well last week, but the lone loss came with the same starting pitching matchup we’ve got today – Dylan Cease vs. Logan Allen. That ended up being another low-scoring affair between these teams (3-1) with Allen turning in the better outing.
I like Allen to get the better of Cease again here. I know some will view Cease as “attractive” in the underdog role, but he has a 5.31 road ERA and, overall, his xERA is two full points higher than last season. Furthermore, his strikeout rate is way down compared to 2022 and he’s given up a HR in five of his last six starts. Allen has allowed 3 ER or less in all five of his starts thus far. While the Guardians’ offense has been pretty inept so far, this is a team that’s on a three-game win streak at home and they’ve won 67% of their games at Progressive Field the L3 seasons as a favorite of -125 to -175. 4% Cleveland (Play to -150)

The Cardinals lineup is clicking on all cylinders right now, pounding out 37 runs in their last five ball games while cashing four Overs in the process. That’s bad news for struggling Reds starter Graham Ashcraft, who has allowed 22 hits and 19 runs in just 12.1 innings of work in his last three outings. The Cardinals hammered him twice last year – both meetings against them; 16 hits and eight earned runs allowed in just 9.1 innings of work. Cinci’s bullpen behind him continues to struggle; more than capable of a late-game implosion should we need it. The Great American Ballpark has been a house of horrors for aging Adam Wainwright, including an 0-2 mark with a 9.58 ERA on this field last year. It’s not like Wainwright is in good current form – he’s allowed 13 runs over 15 innings in three previous starts this season; nary a quality start in the bunch. The Cardinals bullpen behind him has been overused significantly since their last day off back on May 11th. On a warm, humid night in Cincinnati, expect runs in bunches. Take the OVER.

The Padres got back on track in a big way on Sunday. Their 7-0 win snapped a 4-game skid. Rested from yesterday’s off-day, I expect them to carry the positive momentum into the Washington series.
The Nationals also had yesterday off. However, that’s not necessarily a good thing. They’re a dismal 19-42 the past few seasons, when playing with a day off.
Darvish, who averages six innings per start, has a respectable 1.125 WHIP. By comparison, Gore’s 4.8 innings per home start and 1.552 WHIP don’t look very good.
