NBA Rookie of the Year odds: Chet Holmgren leapfrogs Victor Wembanyama

After spending months as the prohibitive favorite to win the NBA Rookie of the Year Award this season, the Wembanyama has been leapfrogged.

The Oklahoma City Thunder’s Chet Holmgren nudged past Wembanyama this week, becoming a -125 favorite (BetMGM) to win the award, just ahead of the French sensation, who’s sitting at -110.

The Gonzaga product opened at +500 to take home the honors, the third-best odds behind Wembanyama and the Portland Trail Blazers’ Scoot Henderson.

As recently as last week, he was +175, trailing just Wembanyama, according to BetMGM’s John Ewing.

But after a hot start and showing no signs of slowing down, Holmgren is on top.

Holmgren has raced out of the gate, averaging 17.9 points, eight rebounds, and 2.2 blocks on 53.8 percent shooting and 43.1 percent from 3-point land.

He’s helped OKC to an 11-6 record, which is tied for the third-best in the Western Conference.

Wembanyama, meanwhile, is putting up big numbers as well — 19.2 points, 9.5 rebounds and 2.6 blocks, although his shooting (43 percent overall and a 25.5 from deep) has been considerably worse than Holmgren’s.

As a team, the Spurs aren’t doing Wembanyama any favors, either.

San Antonio is 3-14, good for last in the West and the third-worst record in the NBA.

Oddsmakers have slowly moved away from the 2023 No. 1 overall pick after he was a clear-cut favorite over the summer.

At one point in late June, Wemby was a -225 favorite to win ROY, far ahead of the second-favorite Henderson, who sat at +350.

By early October, Wembanyama had dropped to +100, barely ahead of Henderson (+250) and Holmgren (+300).

There’s plenty of basketball to play, but oddsmakers already have this as a two-way race.

Only Henderson (+8000) has odds better than +10000.
