The club have won just three points from seven games this season. Steve Bruce is the favourite to replace Mike Ashley as manager. The Magpies are seven points behind Aston Villa. They have a January transfer window to boost their resources. If they are to challenge for the top half, they need to improve their defence. Their chances of making it back to European competition are slim. It is unlikely that they will be able to close the gap with Aston.
