2024 Newmarket Handicap Form Guide & Tips

(1) Imperatriz (Best Bet – $2.50)

Imperatriz is the best sprinter in Australasia, and we’re happy with the odds available.

She showed great toughness to win down the Flemington straight last start, and we thought she would have been around $1.80 for this race.

Take the value odds with the Kiwi.

(2) Bella Nipotina ($11.00)

She is never too far away from the prize, and getting double-figure odds is generous.

We don’t think she’s smart enough to win, but we’re not leaving her out of our first four calculations.

(3) Buenos Noches (Best Each Way – $4.80)

Punters didn’t enjoy the ride Buenos Noches received last start when getting miles too far back.

Running down the straight should negate that problem, and he has been heavily backed to beat the favourite.

He’s only a three-time winner compared to 18 from the favourite, but he has upside.

(5) Ruthless Dame ($19.00)

A talented mare at her best, but we didn’t see her best in four runs last campaign.

She might need more time under her belt this autumn.

(6) Magic Time ($7.50)

Most of her form has come against age-group or same-sex races, but she is a speedy type.

The four-year-old mare owns two fresh up wins, we just wish she was paying more than $7.50. However, it’s better than the opening quote of $6.

(7) The Astrologist ($71.00)

He’s not running anywhere near his best, hence the big odds.

(8) Benedetta ($18.00)

She needed the fresh up run when finishing fourth behind Queman. That’s not the strongest form race for Group 1 racing.

We’re prepared to leave her out of selections for the time being.

(9) It’sourtime ($71.00)

He’s another runner not quick enough to keep up at this level. Better off racing against easier opposition.

(10) Master Fay ($34.00)

The Kiwi runner is unbeaten and connections are having a go at the big time.

New Zealand form is good, but he might be gasping for air come the end of this race.

(11) Rey Magnerio ($41.00)

He knows how to win but not at this level. We want to see him race against a much easier field.

(12) Sghirripa ($13.00)

Only seventh last time out against an easier field. The Adelaide-based runner needs to find a few lengths on that effort.

(13) Skew Wiff ($51.00)

We gave the Kiwi a chance fresh up and he didn’t fire. That was disappointing, but he’s always going to improve with the run.

Carrying 52kg is ideal, and he could sneak into the first four.

(14) Cylinder (Best Roughie – $12.00)

Cylinder is a quality colt and he was only 2.5 lengths behind Imperatriz last start.

Improvement is expected, and punters get value odds for the James Cummings-trained son of Exceed and Excel.
