NHL prop picks Feb. 10: Bet on Hurricanes' Burns, Devils' Toffoli to deliver

Targeting NHL games with plenty of shootout potential is a smart player props strategy and one contest has my interest.

The pregame narrative: There should be no shortage of goals between the New Jersey Devils and the Carolina Hurricanes. Tyler Toffoli and Luke Hughes are good picks to deliver for the Devils, while Brent Burns has my interest for the Canes.

NHL prop picks

Best Bet: Burns to score 1+ points (-125)

Nabbing any member of Carolina's power play to score a point tonight is a wise call.

Burns happens to be the most reasonably priced at -125. He quarterbacks the unit and is a big reason why it ranks second in the NHL (28.0%), only trailing the Tampa Bay Lightning (30.0%).

The veteran rearguard has registered a power-play point in each of his last three games and there's good reason to believe his streak will stay intact.

New Jersey ranks an underwhelming 19th on the penalty kill (79.2%) this season.

The Devils also boast the worst team save percentage (.881) in the league, according to Natural Stat Trick.

The Canes rank 10th in goals per game (3.38) and should be able to capitalize on this plus matchup.

Key stat: Burns has four points in his last three games.

Quick picks

Toffoli to score 1+ points (-114): Toffoli has been as advertised for New Jersey.

The shoot-first winger has 21 goals and 34 points through 48 games, ranking first and third, respectively, on the team this season.

He enters Saturday's contest in fine form, too, registering five goals in his last five outings.

The Hurricanes, like the Devils, are among the league's basement dwellers in team save percentage. Carolina ranks 30th (.883) in team save percentage.

Hughes to score 1+ points (+132): I'm digging the plus-money odds on Hughes to register a point.

He mans the point on the team's top power play, a unit that received a major boost last game. Hughes' brother, Jack, returned to action in a 5-3 loss to the Calgary Flames.

Expect Jack to look sharper in his second game back, a development that'll improve Luke's chances of registering a point.

Hughes notched a point in the most recent meeting between the Devils and Hurricanes on Jan. 25.
