Austin Hill has signed a multi-year contract extension to drive for Richard Childress Racing’s Xfinity Series program. The team announced the deal a day before the series heads to Watkins Glen International Raceway in upstate New York. The 29-year-old Hill leads the Xfinity points standings and has locked up a playoff berth in the second-tier series thanks to four wins. He says “I’ve found a home at Richard Childress Racing, and it’s an honor to be able to continue my career racing for one of the most successful organizations in the garage.” Hill has six wins and 38 top-10 finishes in two seasons at RCR.

Aaron Donald didn't have any significant skirmishes this week then the Los Angeles Rams hosted the Las Vegas Raiders for two joint practices. Of course, Donald skipped one of those practices. But he is much more focused on his comeback from an injury-shortened 2022 as he attempts to play as well as ever in his 10th NFL season. Donald’s task will be daunting. Because the Rams are focused on cleansing their payroll after cutting ties with several key veterans, Los Angeles’ defense appears to have less talent than any unit since Sean McVay’s debut season in 2017.
Stanford has not given up on getting an invitation to join the Atlantic Coast Conference as its fellow Pac-4 members wait and hope to rebuild their plundered league. Lionel Messi spoke publicly Thursday for the first time since announcing on June 7 that he’d join Inter Miami. The 36-year-old said he’s still adapting to his new surroundings, but the transition hasn't been too difficult. He has nine goals in six-matches with Inter Miami and has the club on a six-match winning streak. Inter Miami will compete for its first title Saturday against Nashville in the Leagues Cup final.
The Tennessee Titans have avoided a major injury with wide receiver Treylon Burks’ left knee. Titans coach Mike Vrabel said after practice with the Minnesota Vikings that Burks suffered no structural damage. He was hurt after catching a deep pass in a one-on-one drill. The Titans have higher expectations for their passing attack this season after producing the third-fewest yards in the NFL last season. They added three-time All-Pro wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins. Burks was their 2022 first-round draft pick.

A person with knowledge of the deal says the Baltimore Ravens have agreed to a contract with cornerback Ronald Darby. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the agreement had not been announced. The Ravens needed help at cornerback because of Marlon Humphrey’s foot issue. Several other Baltimore defensive backs have been dealing with health concerns as well. The 29-year-old Darby is coming off his own major injury — to his ACL. That ended his 2022 season in early October after he’d started five games for Denver.
Ambry Thomas’ first regular season in the NFL ended with an interception that sent the San Francisco 49ers to the playoffs. His second season ended with four straight healthy scratches as the once-promising cornerback struggled to find a role in the NFL after prematurely thinking he had arrived. Thomas got to work in the offseason and the change has been evident so far in training camp and the exhibition opener. He has gone from a player fighting for a roster spot to a potential starter on what is projected as one of the NFL’s top defenses.
The Chicago Sky saw big stars exit in the offseason and their coach and general manager leave last month. They hope to make the playoffs after all those changes but have some work to do if they're going to make it happen. Interim coach and general manager Emre Vatansever says “it's time to turn it around.” The Sky are tied for eighth with the Los Angeles Sparks at 12-18 and are 5-9 since Vatansever took over. They’ve lost three straight after winning three in a row. They have 10 games remaining as they try to make the playoffs for the fifth year in a row.
