"Coach Neal Henderson’s cyclocross racing tips: the main thing is to keep looking forward Hello from seat 15B of Continental flight 34, Denver to Houston. This is the first part of a two-part trip that will take me to Chihuahua, Mexico, a few days before next week’s seven-day Vuelta a Chihuahua. I don’t know much about the race right now, but I know it has a lot of hills (the Mexican state of Chihuahua is about the same distance from the equator as Colorado and the Rocky Mountains), Garmin-Chipotle is sending a team, and I hope I’ll get to see Copper Canyon, a hole in the ground so big it makes Arizona’s Grand Canyon look small.

Hello from seat 15B of Continental flight 34, Denver to Houston.

Please come back to VeloNews.com every day next week, where you’ll find daily Chihuahua race reports and pictures. Goal No. 1 is to take a picture of a Chihuahua in Chihuahua, Chihuahua. Goal No. 2 is to borrow a bike so I’m not too slow when my cyclocross season starts again in mid-October.

Yes, my ‘cross season began for real last weekend at the first event of the Boulder Racing Series. I didn’t do very well, but I didn’t crash or hurt myself or my bike, and I finished in the top third of a 75-rider Cat. 4 group. (By the way, well done to VeloNews’ tech editor Matt Pacocha who won the men’s open race at the same event. Paco’ and his wife Cathy just had their first baby, but he still managed to beat all the local racers. Awesome …)

So yes, 'cross is very popular in Boulder right now. The Wednesday morning group ride usually has 60-70 people, and last weekend’s race groups were full. This means the start is very important, which is one of the things Coach Neal and I talked about recently. He thinks the start of a cyclocross race is about 20 percent of winning or losing the race. He explained it like this:"

"This is when you need the swimmers.

If it’s still wet this morning, you will see horses winning at Ellerslie today that were born with rubber boots on.

If you want a form guide for today there is only one - Trentham in July.

Lady Of The House (No4, R9) won there last July and can deal with the worst of winter weather. She is going to get them today and is almost ready to cash in again. That was a better second of hers behind skilled Millennium on this track last time and she should be better. Something Majic (No3) will be in the mix.

As he is only one of two runners not getting big apprentice discounts, Go Thenaki (No3, R2) has a lot against him in the open dash, but he is such a good mud-lover, he won’t be far away.

You only have to look at the numbers for Flying Chief (No5) in these conditions to add him (the other non-discounter).

The 4kg discount on Danzapride (No1) takes him down to a nice 54.5kg and you simply can’t ignore him in multiples.

Craig Thornton thinks My Willie Montague (No2, R3) is back to his best and you have to trust his opinion, but safer bets might be Challenge (No4) and hot Drizzle (No8). Drizzle is much higher in class from his winning pair two weeks ago, but rider Michelle Hopkins thinks he will like these conditions even more.

Metaxa (No6, R4) is a mud-lover and so is Upscope (No3, R5) based on his first second. You are probably not going to get good odds out of Race 6, the McGregor Grant Steeplechase, which looks more fun to watch than to bet on.

Strength and fitness are going to matter for everything in the last 200m of every race today and what better in a flat race than a horse who is coming from three hurdle races.

Real Vision (No1, R7) has quality and, going back to progressive class and with only 55kg on his back, he is going to be hard to beat.

Lazaros (No5, R10) and Floydeboy (No1) are some of the best winter runners in their level and should be locked in the last. Explode Away (No4) looked close to a win on his last start try."

"“The start is 20 percent, overall fitness is 20-30 percent, general technique — getting on and off the bike — is 10-15 percent, and running, depending on how much there is, maybe 20-30 percent,” Henderson said. “So the start is very important. You don’t have to be first right away, but you have to be in a good spot, probably top 10 if you want to join the front group and fight for the podium. The other thing you can’t forget is your skill — or lack of skill — to refocus. That makes up the rest and is definitely another big thing.”

Yes, refocusing, that special skill to let go of, and move on from, the dropped chain, messed up corner, wrong shift, run-up fall, guy who blocked you, guy you blocked and then shouted at you, and/or face plant in the mud. Learn to hit the reset button and ’cross is much more fun. Get caught up in the heat of the moment and it can be a long and annoying 45 minutes.

“Bad things are going to happen out there,” Henderson said. “Sometimes you’re going to crash, someone will fall in front of you, or you’ll mess up a corner and lose five spots. But you can’t be sad and start thinking, ‘I should have done this or that.’ You have to keep looking ahead and think about what’s coming and what you can do better. That’s the best thing about cross: Except at the end, there’s always a next lap so you can keep focusing and refocusing, working on things from lap to lap, using your brain to change for a hard turn or a rough run-up.”

Coach(ed): The happiness of being done Coach(ed): The happiness of being done Photo: thanks to Jason Sumner

Sadly my refocus moment came on the last lap when my chain wouldn’t go out of the big ring as I came to a short little uphill part. In the middle of the unplanned get off-drop swear word-fix chain-get on, four or five guys went flying by, ending a possible top-20 finish. Yes, I’m making reasons …

Coach and I also talked about the need to do good warm-up and course check before race start. This may sound like “obvious” advice, but I’ll be the first to say that I haven’t always done this right — and I guess I’m not the only one.

"“You really want to find out where the hardest parts of the course are, and then ride them fast,” Henderson said. “Doing it fast is the only way you’re going to be sure what the best way is or if your tires are going to stick or if you can ride the sand part. You shouldn’t be working out these things during the race.”

And of course a good warm-up helps a lot in how things go early in the race, especially at … you know it … the start.

“It’s a lot like what you would do for a crit or cross-country race,” Henderson said. “You should be doing very hard efforts, with at least a few that are around 1-2 minutes, and also a few short, strong speed-ups — full sprint kind of efforts. That will make you ready to go off line, and that’s where you need to be because usually in ’cross it’s a big sprint start and then whatever you can keep up after that.”

Okay, we’re almost in Houston, so I’m going to stop here. Next time I’ll have a full story (hopefully) about riding a bike in Chihuahua, Mexico. Until then, happy ’crossing.

Now here’s this week’s Q&A with the coach. Only a few questions, so if you want to ask Neal Henderson a question, please send an e-mail to [email protected]. Don’t forget to include your name and hometown. Questions may be changed for content and clearness.
