California’s bank regulator was too slow to see the growing risks at Silicon Valley Bank and did not act forcefully enough to get the bank to fix its problems. That's according to a report that the state bank regulator issued Monday. The report from the California Department of Financial Protection and Innovation echoed similar issues that the Federal Reserve found in its own report looking at its own supervision of Silicon Valley Bank. The Fed was highly critical of its own role in the bank’s failure, saying its supervisors were also too slow or too unwilling to press the bank’s management to address issues.

Jordan Spieth is out of the AT&T Byron Nelson with a left wrist injury. And he's not sure how quickly it will heal for the PGA Championship next week. Spieth says he had severe pain in his wrist over the weekend and doctors have confirmed an injury that requires rest and limited movement. Spieth grew up in Dallas and still lives there. He first played the Byron Nelson as a 16-year-old and tied for 16th. The PGA Championship is next week at Oak Hill. It's the only major keeping Spieth from the career Grand Slam.

Abortion providers in three states filed a lawsuit Monday aimed at preserving access to the widely used abortion pill mifepristone. The lawsuit comes as the drug's approval is threatened by a separate Texas lawsuit winding its way through U.S. court system. Mifepristone is part of a two-drug regimen used in medication abortion, the most common method for ending pregnancy in the U.S. The lawsuit filed by clinics in Virginia, Montana and Kansas is the latest legal action over the decades-old pill. The providers are suing the U.S. Food and Drug Administration over several longstanding restrictions on the drug's use. But the groups said they hope to secure a court order preserving access in their states.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A criminal investigation is underway after video footage showed two Columbia, Missouri, police officers early Sunday using force on a man who one of them punched in the face five times.

Kansas City Royals LHP Ryan Yarbrough was placed on the 15-day injured list with what was classified as “head fractures” after taking a 106-mph line drive off the right side of his face Sunday. Royals manager Matt Quatraro said Yarbrough has three non-displaced fractures in different spots around his right eye. “He’s stable, improving,” Quatraro said before Monday’s game. “He never lost consciousness. He’s very aware of what’s going on around him. We don’t think at this time will require surgery. He’s getting further testing and we’ll have a better idea (of his prognosis) in the next 24 hours.”

The University of Iowa says 26 athletes across five sports are suspected of wagering on sports in violation of NCAA rules and more than 100 people have been linked to an investigation. Iowa State acknowledged about 15 of its athletes across three sports also are suspected of violating gambling rules. Last week, Alabama fired baseball coach Brad Bohannon following a report of suspicious bets made at an Ohio casino involving his team. NCAA rules prohibit athletes, coaches and staff from betting on amateur, collegiate and professional sports in which the NCAA conducts a championship.

A trial date has been set for two white men in Mississippi who are accused of chasing and shooting at a Black FedEx driver who had dropped off a package at a home. Brandon Case and his father, Gregory Charles Case, were indicted in November on charges of attempted first-degree murder, conspiracy and shooting into the vehicle of D’Monterrio Gibson in January 2022. The Daily Leader reports that on Monday, Lincoln County Circuit Court Judge David Strong set Aug. 8 as the starting date for their trial. Gibson was not injured but the chase and gunfire sparked social media complaints of racism in Brookhaven.

Southampton is on the brink of relegation after 11 years in the English Premier League following a 4-3 loss at Nottingham Forest, which climbed out of the bottom three. Taiwo Awoniyi’s brace, Morgan Gibbs-White’s penalty and Danilo’s brilliant team goal earn Forest its latest home win at the expense of the last-placed Saints. Their demotion could be confirmed at the weekend. Forest took full advantage of defeats for Leeds and Leicester in this round of games to move up to 16th place in the 20-team league and three points above the drop zone with three games to play. Southampton’s situation is far bleaker despite goals from Carlos Alcaraz, Lyanco and James Ward-Prowse.

Arizona House Rep. Flavio Bravo will take over the state Senate seat left vacant by former Democratic Sen. Minority Leader Raquel Terán. The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors announced their appointment of Bravo to the position Monday. Terán resigned in April to run for U.S. Rep. Ruben Gallego’s congressional seat. Gallego is eying a run against U.S. Sen. Kyrsten Sinema in 2024. Bravo, who began serving as a state representative in January, was chosen from a list of three Democratic candidates. This is the second state legislative appointment the county board has had to make in three days but with much less attention. On Friday, expelled Republican lawmaker Liz Harris failed to regain her House seat.

Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee has announced that he will call lawmakers back on August 21 for a special session after the Republican-led Legislature adjourned earlier this year without taking on gun control. The announcement comes weeks after six people — including three young children — were killed in a Nashville school shooting. The tragedy sparked Lee, a Republican, to urge the General Assembly to pass legislation that would keep firearms away from people who could harm themselves or others. But instead, GOP leaders moved to quickly adjourn rather than take up the governor’s request in the remaining days of an already chaotic session. Within hours of the Legislature adjourning, Lee announced he would call a special session to take up the topic.

Just how does this debt limit standoff end? Plenty of scenarios are being publicly and privately gamed out, but no one knows for sure. The possibilities range from kumbaya to total economic chaos with plenty of options in between. So far, neither President Joe Biden nor House Speaker Kevin McCarthy is giving ground ahead of talks slated for Tuesday. Time is short: The Treasury Department warns the U.S. could default as soon as June 1 if there is no deal. Potential outcomes include an extension of the deadline and Biden taking action on his own.

Gov. Glenn Youngkin is celebrating the passage of a bill supporters say will help Virginia better track and combat growing instances of antisemitism. Under the legislation, which will take effect July 1, Virginia will adopt a definition of antisemitism used by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance. The state will use that non-legally binding definition for training and education, and for tracking and reporting antisemitism. Youngkin hosted a ceremony Monday to ceremonially sign the measure. It will take effect July 1. He was joined by Jewish faith and community leaders and a Holocaust survivor.

U.S. officials say the United States will provide $1.2 billion more in long-term military aid to Ukraine to further bolster its air defenses as Russia continues to pound Ukraine with drones, rockets and surface-to-air missiles. The aid package is expected to be announced on Tuesday and the money will be provided under the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative. Unlike the U.S. equipment, weapons and ammunition that are more frequently sent to Ukraine from Pentagon stocks — so they can be delivered quickly — this money is to be spent over the coming months or even years to ensure Ukraine’s future security needs. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the aid package has not yet been formally announced.

At a time of soaring home prices, rising homelessness and a housing crisis that will require the state to build 1 million homes over the next two-plus decades to keep up with population growth, Gov. Jay Inslee on Monday signed a new law legalizing duplexes and fourplexes in most neighborhoods in nearly every city to increase housing supply. House Bill 1110 overrides local zoning rules that have long kept large areas in cities for only single-family homes. The new law will not ban the construction of single family homes, but it will stop cities from requiring neighborhoods to have only single-family homes.

Hannah Gadsby’s new Netflix special illustrates a different side of the comedian that fans may not have expected  —  a happier one. The comedian kicks it off with good news — “I got married. I know! It’s nice” — and then promises viewers a change of pace from previous sets: “This is going to be a feel-good show because I believe I owe you one.” The new hourlong stand-up special recorded at the Sydney Opera house in Australia explores marriage, sudden fame, parenting styles, cultural differences and life with autism. “Something Special” airs Tuesday.

Chaos has reigned in the English Premier League’s relegation battle after Everton scored five goals in a surprising win to climb out of the bottom three and Leicester conceded five in a confidence-sapping loss to drop into it. Southampton’s 11-year stay in the top division is surely over after a 4-3 loss at Nottingham Forest plunged the last-placed team eight points from safety with three games left. There was a total of 21 goals in three games involving relegation-threatened teams. Everton's 5-1 victory at Brighton came out of nowhere and even wilder was Fulham's 5-3 win over Leicester. Leicester and Leeds fell into the relegation zone alongside Southampton.
