Notre Dame at NC State odds, expert picks: Irish look for 3-0 start on the road

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish look to improve to 3-0 when they head to ACC country to take on the NC State Wolfpack Saturday afternoon. This will be the Irish’s first true road game of the season and Marcus Freeman’s team will enjoy the status as favorite in the Wolfpack’s home opener.

After overwhelming an overmatched Navy and FCS Tennessee State by a combined score of 98-6, this game serves as Notre Dame’s first real test of the season. Wake Forest transfer quarterback Sam Hartman has already put his stamp on this offense, which is averaging 500 yards per game with 13 total touchdowns. On the other side, the Irish defense has given up a total of 325 yards while yielding just two field goals.

NC State was victorious in its opener, defeating UConn on the road 24-14 last Thursday. Quarterback Brennan Armstrong, a transfer from Virginia, threw for 155 yards and also led the team with 96 yards on the ground. The Wolfpack piled up 209 total rushing yards in the victory and will need to enjoy similar success on Saturday if they want to upset Notre Dame.

It should be pointed out that NC State is one of the few programs in the country that can claim a winning record against Notre Dame. The Wolfpack enjoy a 2-1 advantage all-time, including a split of the two meetings since the Irish entered into a scheduling partnership with the ACC in 2014. Besides evening out the series, Notre Dame also will be looking for its first victory in Raleigh. NC State won 10-3 on its home field back in 2016.
