Nathan Cleary and Daly Cherry-Evans are the two most expensive halfbacks in the NRL. Meninga rested his players from the grand final. Cherry Evans was not appointed captain or vice-captain. Cleare won the premierships with the Panthers.
Ben Hunt and Harry Grant will start at hooker and dummy half for Australia. Damien Cook has been named as a standby player. Meninga will follow Queensland's blueprint of using both in the 17. The selection of Hunt-Grant will work a treat for the Kangaroos.

Cherry-Evans will get first shot at halfback, Cameron Murray will play his preferred position of lock, Angus Crichton and Jeremiah Nanai will make their Kangarooos debut in the second row, Jake Trbojevic, Tino Fa’asuamaleaui, Reuben Cotter and Patrick Carrigan make up the pack.
Jack Wighton and Matt Burton play for their respective clubs at five-eighth and centre respectively. They are unlikely to be used in Australia's clash with Fiji. Valentine Holmes will play at centre with Murray Taulagi on the wing.
New Zealand are the favourites to win the Rugby League World Cup in 2022. They destroyed Super League grand finalists Leeds 74-0 in a warm-up match. The Kiwis have six grand finalists in their squad. Jared Waerea-Hargreaves, Kenny Bromwich and Jesse Bromweg are all set to play in the final World cup. Dylan Brown, Jahrome Hughes and Joey Manu are star-studded.
The most important player for the Kangaroos is the halfback. Nathan Cleary is tipped to play the role ahead of Daly Cherry-Evans. Cleare's kicking game and all-round skill could win it for Kangarooos.
