NRL Tips Round 23: Betting preview, odds and predictions

The finals aren't far away, and Round 23 of the NRL has tossed up some tasty matches with top-eight implications.

On Thursday, the Roosters and Sea Eagles will do battle in Sydney, before the Panthers welcome the Storm to Penrith in a blockbuster Friday night clash.

A Queensland Derby between the Broncos and Cowboys will take place on Saturday, with the Raiders and Tigers rounding off the week of action.

Below are The Sporting News’ betting predictions and best bets for Round 23.

Sydney Roosters vs. Manly Sea Eagles prediction, tip, best bet

The Roosters have failed to fire this season, with a finals spot looking increasingly out of reach.

As for the Sea Eagles, they'll be looking to squeeze into the top eight and have a genuine chance of doing so under the leadership of halfback Daly Cherry-Evans.

They're currently riding a two-game win streak, and despite being underdogs for this clash, they have a good shot at making it three on the trots.

Notably, the Tricolours have lost their last three home games, so Manly shouldn't fear playing away from Brookvale.

BEST BET: Sea Eagles to win ($2.30)

Penrith Panthers vs. Melbourne Storm prediction, tip, best bet

The Storm were back at their best last week against the Eels, but face a stern test this round against the reigning premiers.

When the sides faced off in Melbourne last month it was the Panthers who took the win following an impressive comeback, and it's likely to go their way again on Friday.

The last few encounters between the pair at BlueBet Stadium have been scrappy affairs, with two strong defences going toe-to-toe.

Expect a similar scenario on this occasion, with a superior Penrith side eventually flexing their muscle to take the two points.

BEST BET: Panthers to win + under 39.5 points ($2.65)

North Queensland Cowboys vs. Brisbane Broncos prediction, tip, best bet

The Cowboys are back in Townsville this week after a surprising defeat to the Titans, and will notably be without the suspended Valentine Holmes.

A sizzling Broncos side stands in their way of two crucial points in the top-eight race, with Kevin Walters' team pushing for a potential minor premiership.

Both outfits have showcased their attacking abilities this season, so we should expect a high-paced and high-scoring game.

A total of 44 points were scored when the Broncos got the better of the Cowboys earlier in the season, and this fixture typically brings plenty of points.

BEST BET: Over 42.5 points ($1.87)

Canberra Raiders vs. Wests Tigers prediction, tip, best bet

The Raiders were blown away by the Knights on the weekend and need to re-group as they look to maintain their spot in the finals.

They face a Tigers side rooted to the bottom of the ladder, so winning on Sunday should be achievable for Ricky Stuart's team.

In fact, we're predicting they'll win big and enjoy a strong bounce-back performance.

Last round's result proved that they cannot afford to become complacent, so they'll look to make amends this time around.
