Nysos is in San Felipe, but card may be postponed

Nysos, the morning-line favorite for the Preakness Future Wager, reportedly was one of the five 3-year-olds entered Wednesday for the Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes, which might be postponed from Saturday to Sunday because of stormy weather coming to Santa Anita late this week.

Imagination, Mc Vay, Scatify and Wine Me Up also were entered for the San Felipe, according to Daily Racing Form’s Brad Free.

“A decision on moving the Saturday card to Sunday will be made early (Thursday) morning,” the Santa Anita racing office told horsemen in a text message late Wednesday morning.

The National Weather Service predicted a 60 percent likelihood of rain starting late Friday afternoon and continuing through Saturday night. Clear weather was forecast for Sunday and a high of 61 degrees.

Leaving room for the possibility of a drier forecast for Saturday, entries were taken and fields drawn Wednesday for the program that also includesthe Santa Anita Handicap (G1), the San Felipe (G2), the Frank E. Kilroe Mile(G2) and the Buena Vista (G2).

“The overnight will not be produced until (Thursday) morning after a decision has been made regarding Saturday racing,” the racing office said.

Newgrange and Newgate, who finished 1-2 in the San Pasqual (G2), headline the seven entries in the Big ’Cap that also includes Highland Falls, Mixto, Reincarnate, Salesman and Subsanador, Free said on X.

For now it is a case of hurry up and wait until the forecast is updated Thursday.

“We are monitoring the weather forecast and in the processof making contingency plans in the event we are unable to race Saturday,” the SantaAnita text said. “We are still taking entries for Saturday, however, racesoffered for Saturday may be usedforeither Saturday or Sunday. If Saturday is canceled, those races would be movedto Sunday. Races offered in the condition book for Sunday would then be offeredfor Monday with those entries being taken Thursday.”

The San Felipe is a Kentucky Derby 2024 qualifying prep, but Nysos is ineligible for those points since his trainer Bob Baffert remains under indefinite suspension by Churchill Downs Inc. The points he would earn for finishing Saturday will be vacated and not transfered.
