ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — For the Rays, it was good to get back home.

PGA club professional Michael Block is making noise at the PGA Championship. The 46-year-old who teaches out of a club in Southern California shot back-to-back rounds of even-par 70 to outplay many of the big names in the field while easily making the cut. Block is five shots off the lead through two rounds. He came to Oak Hill having never reached the weekend in six previous tries at majors. Block says he intends to make a run at the title over the weekend, pointing out he has far less pressure on him than the players he'll be competing against.

San Diego State University says an internal investigation found no wrongdoing by former punter Matt Araiza in an alleged gang rape at an off-campus party in October 2021. In a statement to Yahoo Sports, the school said, “There are no findings against Matt Araiza." The school also says none of the former students named in a civil suit are the subject of a current investigation, although it reserves the right to “reinstate” an investigation if there are new developments. The San Diego District Attorney decided late last year to not press criminal charges against Araiza, who was released by the Buffalo Bills in August.

Brendan Shanahan started the week wanting to keep Kyle Dubas in the fold. A stunning, roller-coaster five days culminated with the Toronto Maple Leafs now looking for a new general manager ahead of what could be a defining summer for the success-starved Original Six franchise. Shanahan, the team’s president, fired his 37-year-old GM on Friday, bringing an end to a tumultuous stretch that began with Dubas stating publicly Monday he wasn’t certain he wanted to remain in the role. The Maple Leafs said in a press release issued earlier Friday the organization was “parting ways” with Dubas, whose contract was set to expire June 30, after five seasons in charge. At a press conference later in the afternoon, Shanahan said he decided to move on from Dubas that morning.

HARTFORD, Conn. — The NHL’s Arizona Coyotes may soon have a new home, and Gov. Ned Lamont and Mayor Luke Bronin would like it to be Hartford.

Chicago White Sox closer Liam Hendriks took another step in his comeback from cancer by throwing live batting practice. But it remains unclear when he will return to the bullpen. Manager Pedro Grifol says Hendriks threw about 20 pitches and “felt good.” But he also says there’s still no timetable on a return and that the organization will determine the next step. Hendriks went from noticing lumps on his neck last summer to being diagnosed with stage 4 non-Hodgkin lymphoma. He announced last month he was in remission after having immunotherapy and chemotherapy. He began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Charlotte two weeks ago and made six appearances with the minor league club before the White Sox opted to bring him back to Chicago this week.

San Diego Padres slugger Manny Machado has been placed on the 10-day injured list because of a hairline fracture in his left hand. Machado was hit by a pitch Monday night. The move is backdated to Tuesday and manager Bob Melvin says there’s a possibility Machado can return when the Padres play at the New York Yankees next weekend. Like the rest of the superstar-studded Padres lineup, Machado is struggling, hitting just .231 with five homers and 19 RBIs. He was an All-Star each of the last two seasons and was runner-up in NL MVP voting last year.

Two-time Indy 500 champion Takuma Sato turned the fastest lap at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 27 years on Friday to pace the last practice before qualifying. Sato's teammate and defending winner Marcus Ericsson was close behind him on another banner day for Chip Ganassi Racing. Sato also was fastest in Wednesday's practice and Ericsson was quickest on Thursday. The Team Penske duo of Josef Newgarden and Will Power also had solid four-lap averages, though Newgarden was feeling a bit less cheerful after drawing the 34th and least favorable qualifying slot for Saturday.

Taxed raced to an upset victory in the Black-Eyed Susan Stakes, closing strong for convincing win over Hoosier Philly and unbeaten favorite Faiza. Taxed was claimed by owner Richard Bahde last year for $50,000. The filly won this $300,000 race at Pimlico by 3 3/4 lengths over Hoosier Philly. Faiza settled for third for trainer Bob Baffert, who makes his return to Triple Crown racing at Saturday’s Preakness after missing time while suspended. Faiza was a 3-5 favorite after winning her first five races, all in California.

Texas Rangers star pitcher Jacob deGrom says he has “turned a corner” in returning to the active roster by throwing a 25-pitch bullpen session. The 25-pitch workout was a step forward from his previous session a few days earlier, when he threw “16 or 18” pitches. DeGrom has been sidelined since April 28 with elbow inflammation. He was placed on the 15-day injured list on April 29, a day after he left a start against the New York Yankees in the fourth inning.

Two-time Grand Slam champion Simona Halep has been accused of a second doping offense by the International Tennis Integrity Agency. The ITIA said the new charge announced Friday is separate from the provisional suspension Halep received last year after failing a drug test during the U.S. Open in August. The charge involves Halep's Athlete Biological Passport, which provides a baseline reading of substances in an athlete's body. Halep is a 31-year-old from Romania who reached No. 1 in the WTA rankings in 2017. She won Wimbledon in 2019 by beating Serena Williams in the final. Halep says she is a “victim of contamination.”

The English Premier League title race could be decided if Nottingham Forest beats Arsenal. Manchester City will therefore clinch the title. Arsenal’s best hope is to prolong the race, with City one win away from being crowned champion. Bayern Munich can take a big step toward retaining the Bundesliga title with a win over third-placed Leipzig. Bayern leads Borussia Dortmund by one point with two games to go. After being eliminated from the Champions League, AC Milan needs to get back on track against already-relegated Sampdoria to try to make it into next season’s competition from Serie A. Barcelona will receive the trophy for its recently won Spanish league title when it hosts Real Sociedad at Camp Nou.
