Odds to win the Stanley Cup: Oilers leading, Jets hold value

Two teams now sit inside 10-to-1 to take home the Stanley Cup this season.

The latest: The Edmonton Oilers now share the best odds to win the cup with the Colorado Avalanche as both teams continue to dominate. The Winnipeg Jets stand out as our best value pick, while the Philadelphia Flyers are becoming an increasingly intriguing option.

Best odds to win the Stanley Cup

Edmonton is looking like a legitimate Stanley Cup contender.

The Oilers have been dominating on a nightly basis, outscoring opponents 54-23 over their current 14-game winning streak. Edmonton is now 22-3-0 over their last 25 games, boasting a staggering plus-47 goal differential during that span.

Consistent goaltending has been a key factor, as Stuart Skinner has been performing at an elite level. Skinner won his 11th straight game on Tuesday, setting the Oilers’ all-time winning streak record for a goalie in the process.

Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl are leading from the front with 36 combined points over the last 14 games. The Oilers have also received contributions from across their lineup, with players like Warren Foegele and Zach Hyman chipping in another 29 points combined over the streak.

Colorado will certainly be a challenging contender, however, as Nathan MacKinnon is showing no signs of slowing down. MacKinnon scored four goals against the Capitals on Wednesday, and the Oilers will likely have to take down the Avalanche on their way to the cup.

Other odds to win the Stanley Cup

Winnipeg’s Stanley Cup odds continue to get shorter each week.

The Jets currently hold the 8th shortest odds despite being third overall in league standings with 65 points. While Winnipeg has lost each of its last two games, those came against Boston and Toronto, both of which are top-10 teams in the NHL.

Defence and goaltending have been the Jets’ strong suit this season. Winnipeg leads the league in goals against per game (2.26) and team save percentage (.922). Connor Hellebuyck has led the way with 23 wins, a 2.17 goals-against average, and a .925 save percentage.

Up front, Mark Scheifele and Nikolaj Ehlers picked up the slack in Kyle Connor’s absence, recording a combined 30 points in the 16 games he missed due to a knee injury. Connor is now back in the Jets lineup and recorded an assist in his first game back against the Islanders.

Winnipeg also has the 12th-easiest schedule remaining in the NHL, according to Tankathon. If the Jets can maintain their current pace in the second half of the season, their Stanley Cup odds are likely to shorten even further.

The Flyers are emerging as a legitimate playoff contender out of the Eastern Conference despite their recent slump.

Before losing three in a row, Philadelphia was on a five-game winning streak, taking down top opponents like Winnipeg and Dallas. The Flyers currently sit in third in the Metropolitan division and still hold a five-point lead over the Devils.

Philly has been stellar on the road this season, something that comes in handy in the playoffs. The Flyers have a 14-6-4 record in away games and are averaging 3.17 goals per game on the road, compared to 2.71 at home.

Part of the Flyers' success this season has been the emergence of goalie Samuel Ersson. With Carter Hart now taking a leave of absence, the workload will fall on Ersson, who has proven he can handle it. The 24-year-old boasts a 2.44 GAA and .905 SV% with three shutouts over 21 starts.

Philadelphia has to navigate through the 12th-hardest remaining schedule to finish the season. If John Tortorella and the Flyers can maintain their position and make the playoffs, they’ll be an extremely tough team to eliminate.

The Canadian teams

The NHL has reached the midway point of the season and four Canadian teams have 15/1 odds or shorter to win the Stanley Cup. Three contenders continue to battle it out in the Western Conference, while the Maple Leafs look like the only Canadian team that will make the playoffs in the Eastern Conference.

  • After a 1-0 win against Winnipeg on Wednesday, Toronto extended its streak of consecutive games without being shut out to 209, which is now the seventh-longest streak in NHL history.
