Oddsmakers don’t love Washington’s CFP chances despite top-4 ranking

In the latest reveal of the College Football Playoff rankings, Washington came in at No. 4, which would earn the Huskies a spot in the CFP if the season were to end today.

Their elevation came after weeks of coming in at No. 5, since the first CFP reveal in Week 10, despite an undefeated record and Heisman Trophy candidate Michael Penix Jr. at quarterback. Georgia, Michigan, Ohio State and Florida State routinely came in ahead of Washington. Florida State dropped to No. 5 Tuesday after losing quarterback Jordan Travis for the season in their latest win.

Unfortunately for Washington, the season doesn’t end today, and oddsmakers don’t like its chances to remain in the top-four. At BetMGM, seven teams have better odds than Washington to make the CFP.

Odds to make the College Football Playoff (BetMGM)
  • Georgia -350
  • Michigan -250
  • Oregon -175
  • Ohio State +100
  • Texas +125
  • Florida State +135
  • Alabama +150
  • Washington +160

The biggest road block for the Huskies seems to be No. 6 Oregon, though Washington already beat the Ducks in October. In all likelihood, the teams will meet again in the Pac-12 championship game, and oddsmakers seem to think Oregon will prevail in a remtch and pass the Huskies in the rankings.

Oregon’s odds to win the national championship are tied with Alabama for fourth-best at +700. Washington is a distant fifth at +1200. The Ducks first have to get past No. 16 Oregon State Friday for rivalry week. Washington has a much easier game Saturday against Washington State.

Also of note after the latest CFP rankings is the distance between Michigan and Ohio State’s odds, ahead of their meeting Saturday. Oddsmaker clearly expect the Wolverines to win that game based on their -250 odds to make the CFP compared to +100 for the Buckeyes.

Michigan is favored by 3.5 at home.
