Breaking down College Football Playoff Selection Committee’s penultimate Top 6 teams

J.D. Predicts Tuesday's CFP Rankings

The College Football Playoff Selection Committee provided its latestrankings after Week 13 games wrapped up, slotting the top six contenders for the four-team CFP field along with the top contenders to land New Year’s Day bids with growing debate up top as conference championships approach.

As the season nears the finish and CFP discussions heat up, the top six teams in the picture remain Florida State, Georgia, Michigan, Ohio State, Oregon and Washington.

With a rivalry game between Michigan and Ohio State headlining the Week 13 schedule, debate will continued to echo over the order of one-loss teams as they jockey for position in the CFP conversation.

Take a look at what we have seen from each CFP contender, and what is up next.

Georgia has once again run the table through the regular season and has a chance to build a 30-game win streak if they continue their dominate ways into the postseason. The final roadblock between the Bulldogs and another CFP berth is an SEC championship matchup against Alabama.

Debate will surely come up between now and Sunday over the Georgia resume compared to other teams in the event they drop Saturday’s game. Could a one-loss Georgia, without a conference title under its belt, still make the four-team field based on the sustained dominance and status as back-to-back champion? Only time, and a variety of potential outcomes will tell.

Remaining schedule: Alabama (SEC Championship)

Michigan took care of business in Jim Harbaugh’s absence and gets him back for the postseason run. Sherrone Moore looked more than capable of running the sideline during the biggest win of the season against Ohio State and set up the Wolverines for a CFP berth if they can handle Iowa.

Despite all the off-field conversations surrounding Michigan this season, they have continued to cement their spot among the elite teams looking to win a national championship. They enter Saturday’s game as heavy favorites to win the Big Ten and claim a playoff spot.

Remaining schedule: Iowa (Big Ten Championship)

Washington overcame some slow starts in the middle of the season and ran through the Pac-12 gauntlet untouched. Now a rematch with Oregon stands between the Huskies and a CFP berth and an interesting matchup with one of the country’s elite defenses.

Oregon is no push-over in the title game, also playing for a playoff spot and revenge from the regular season game which came down to the wire.

Remaining schedule: Oregon (Pac-12 Championship)

Florida State survived its first test without Jordan Travis on Saturday, carrying the undefeated record into the ACC Championship game against Louisville. Unfortunately, their opponent took a bad loss in the final week and weakened the resume boost possible from another win this week.

Conversation has persisted since the injury over Florida State’s spot in the CFP conversation, and whether the committee would really leave out an undefeated Power Five conference champion based on an injury to their quarterback. Only time will tell for sure, but this week’s ranking serves as a hint about how things are viewed.

Remaining schedule: Louisville (ACC Championship)

Oregon comes into the conference championship with a chance to turn its one-loss resume into a serious CFP candidate by dragging Washington into the same category. The Ducks have remained among the top eye-test teams all season even in their lone loss vs. the Huskies.

The question mark surrounding Oregon has been the strength of their schedule and the wins on the record compared to other programs around them.

Remaining schedule: Washington (Pac-12 Championship)

Ohio State took a loss in The Game and will now sit at home during conference championship week hoping for chaos. After falling outside the Top Four for the first time this season, the Buckeyes have no clear path back inside the playoff without losses from surrounding teams.

The most interest point for Ohio State to watch is how the resume stacks up with other one-loss team who have another chance to add a conference championship to the resume.
