Ohio reports impressive first month of sports betting

Ohio sports betting is off to a fast start, as the Ohio Casino Control Commission reported more than $1 billion in online sports bets during its first month of operation.

The Buckeye State reported $1,090,265,2121 in online sports bets for January. The state officially launched sports betting on Jan. 1, 2023, at 12:01 a.m.

In total, Ohioans bet $1.13 billion online and through retail sportsbooks in January.

Ohio launch rivals biggest markets

Ohio was impressively able to crest the $1 billion handle mark during its first month of sports betting operation. New Jersey became the first state in the country to take in over $1 billion in bets for a month in September 2021, and both the Garden State and New York now consistently break $1 billion in handle during the busy months of the sports betting season.

Ohio wasn’t too far off the pace for state launches when compared with the top markets in the country. Ohioans placed $1,090,265,2121 in online sports bets during its first month of operation, compared with New York’s initial $1,669,719,034 during its first month of operation in January 2022.

DraftKings and FanDuel’s took in more than 76% of the state’s online sports betting handle for the month, totaling a combined $838,165,513 in bets.

Millions in sports betting tax revenue

In total, the Ohio Casino Control Commission reported $205.7 million in taxable online sports betting revenue, $3.23 million in taxable retail sports betting revenue, and $208.93 million in total taxable revenue for the Buckeye State.

FanDuel and DraftKings reported the most revenue for the month, respectively. FanDuel reported $103.24 million and DraftKings reported $55.1 million for January.

Ohio’s sports betting tax rate is 10% and operators are not yet allowed to deduct promotions from their taxable revenue. For January, Ohio took in more than $20.89 million in sports betting taxes.
