Oklahoma vs. Kansas odds, props, predictions: Sooners try to avoid trap against underrated Jayhawks in CFB Week 9

The Oklahoma Sooners have improved rapidly during Brent Venables' second year in Norman. So much so that if they continue on their current trajectory, they will return to the College Football Playoff for the first time since 2019. Coming into Saturday's game in Lawrence undefeated, the Sooners are the favorites, but the Kansas Jayhawks will look to pull off the upset at home.

The noon ET kickoff on FOX is one of the best early games in Week 9. The Sooners and Jayhawks have both scored at least 31 points in their last three games. The two explosive offenses give this Big 12 matchup the potential for a high-scoring affair.

Let's look ahead to Oklahoma vs. Kansas odds, props, and predictions for Saturday's primetime college football game.

Oklahoma betting news: Dillon Gabriel looks to build on Heisman campaign

Before the season, Oklahoma quarterback Dillon Gabriel was outside the top 10 for odds to win the Heisman. Seven games into the season, Gabriel has ascended to the top five. Last year, Oklahoma had one of its worst seasons in a long time, and as the new season began, people somewhat forgot about Gabriel.

The fifth-year senior has quickly reminded college football fans across the nation just how good he is putting up elite numbers, and his game-winning drive capped off with a touchdown pass was the definition of a Heisman moment. With no ranked opponents left on the schedule, Oklahoma needs to take care of business and not let off the gas.

Should the Sooners win out and Gabriel continues to average over 300 yards passing per game and over 2.5 passing touchdowns, it is almost certain he will get at least an invite to the Heisman ceremony.

The defense also deserves credit for the rapid improvement in Norman. After giving up 30 points per game last season, which was a massive disappointment after Brett Venables came to town as one of the nation's best defensive coordinators, the Sooners have bounced back. Oklahoma is holding opponents to an average of 16.1 points per game through seven games this season.

Kansas betting news: Can Jayhawks shock the Sooners?

The Jayhawk offense has been explosive all season, and the defense has had good moments. The loss to Texas is understandable, as the Longhorns are among college football's best teams. Last week's loss to Oklahoma State was hard to swallow, though.

Backup quarterback Jason Bean had his best game of the season production-wise, putting up season-bests in passing yards and passing touchdowns, but turnovers ruined what should have been a career day. Bean fumbled it twice and was lucky the Jayhawks recovered it both times, but his two interceptions were painful in a one-score loss.

Beans' two interceptions came in the second half and were the primary reason the Jayhawks' 32-24 lead turned into 15 unanswered points for Oklahoma State en route to their 39-32 win over Kansas. Kansas will need Bean to have similar production without the turnovers to have any chance of upsetting an Oklahoma Sooner team fighting for a Big 12 title and College Football Playoff spot.

It would be wise for the Jayhawks to feed running back Devin Neal more, as the junior has been very productive all season. The mystery for Neal is the number of touches he gets each game. He averages 7.3 yards per carry and 10.8 yards per reception.

The Jayhawks need to limit the number of possessions and try to control the time of possession to pull off an upset against Oklahoma. Feeding the uber-productive Devin Neal and taking some of the pressure off backup quarterback Jason Bean would be a good place to start.

Oklahoma vs. Kansas prediction: Sooners stay perfect

Oklahoma looks like it is 100% back during Venables' second season, and the Sooners are the Big 12's best chance to represent the conference in the College Football Playoff. The way Dillon Gabriel is playing, it is hard to imagine Kansas pulling off an upset.

Expect Gabriel to have another 300-plus yards passing and a multiple-touchdown performance. While Kansas will likely score over the average of what the Sooners have given up to opponents this season, it will not be enough to pull off a win in front of their home crowd.
