Penguins Players Returning From Injury

Part of the reason for the Penguins inconsistent play of late has been due to the injuries they’ve been dealing with over the last month. Number one netminder, Tristan Jarry as well as blueliners Kris Letang, Jeff Petry and Jan Rutta all have missed time along with a slew of forwards. Slowly, but surely, those players are coming back to the ice.

Jarry was spectacular in his return to the net on Friday against Ottawa, stopping 44 of 45 shots en route to a 4-1 victory. In addition, Petry jumped right back into the fold, playing over 25 minutes, a team high for the night. Although Letang is inching closer to a return, he is not expected to be back for this matchup against the Devils.

Although Pittsburgh was defeated 4-2 at home by the Devils three weeks ago, they have beaten New Jersey in their last four meetings at the Prudential Center.

The Pens offense seems to have awoken somewhat of late scoring four goals in three consecutive games. Regardless of where they currently reside in the standings, the Penguins are staying relevant in the Stanley Cup odds, amongst the top 10 teams in the league. With Crosby, Malking and Letang still in the mix, the odds of them winning at all at +1800 are quite appetizing.

Devils Finding Limited Success at Home

In one of the more eye-raising stats, the Devils are just 11-10-2 at home this year versus a league-best 18-2-2 on the road. Nobody on New Jersey really has a good answer on why they can’t get more victories at home, but it’s beginning to be a slight cause for concern. They are just 9-14 against the spread at home this campaign.

One player who has performed equally whether it be on home ice or away is Jack Hughes, who has taken his game to a new level this season. He has produced 28 points in New Jersey as well as in the arenas of the Devils’ opponents. Having already tied his career high with 56 points, he is on pace to top the 100-point plateau this season.

In any other year, that might be enough to make him a favorite in the Hart Trophy odds, but Connor McDavid is the heavy chalk at this point, and for good reason.

The Devils are coming off a 4-3 overtime loss to the Kraken which snapped a five-game winning streak. Their last two games were both settled by a single goal.

Pittsburgh is a perfect 4-0 against the spread in day games this season, while the Devils sit at just 3-3. New Jersey has earned the right to be considered the favorites in the NHL odds for this one, but their poor play at home suggests they are ripe for a loss at the hands of the Pens Sunday afternoon.
