The New York Islanders (7-4-0) finish off their three-game road trip with a Saturday matinee against the Detroit Red Wings (5-3-2). Puck drop is slated for 1 PM ET from Little Caesar’s Arena.

The New York Islanders enter the contest having won their last five games, outscoring their opponents 22-9 over that stretch.

“Winning is a lot more fun than losing, so it’s been a good stretch for us. Obviously, there’s going to be ups and downs. I don’t think we are going to win out here for the rest of the season, but we want to keep this good thing going and hope we roll that in and finish the road trip right.”

The New York Islanders did not skate Saturday morning but did skate Friday afternoon. Everyone was accounted for besides Cal Clutterbuck. Nikita Soshnikov skated in his place on the fourth line and seems to be the player that will slot in against Detroit if Clutterbuck is not ready.

“We’ll see tomorrow,” New York Islanders head coach Lane Lambert offered.

Semyon Varlamov (2-1-0 3.03 GAA, .907 SV%) was the first goaltender off the ice on Thursday and will likely get the start against the Red Wings. Despite how strong Ilya Sorokin has played, the Islanders have a back-to-back coming up Monday (Calgary Flames) and Tuesday (New York Rangers), so Lambert likley wants to get Varlamov a game in.

Lane Lambert spent was drafted by the Detroit Red Wings in the second round (25th overall) back in 1983 and spent three NHL seasons in the Motor City. He was roommates with Steve Yzerman, the Red Wings current general manager.

Prior to the contest against the Islanders, the Red Wings have recalled former Islander Austin Czarnik.

Ville Husso (4-1-1, 2.17, .934 SV%) is expected to start in goal.

The Red Wings will be celebrating their 1998 Stanley Cup team prior to the contest against New York.

ISLANDERS NOTES

Today, the New York Islanders visit the Detroit Red Wings in the first of three matchups between the two clubs this season.

The last time these teams met was March 24, when four Islanders recorded multi-point games in a 5-2 win at UBS Arena.

Today’s game is the final matchup of a three-game road trip for the Islanders, while the Red Wings are on the front end of a back-to-back and visit the NY Rangers tomorrow.

The Islanders enter today’s contest with five straight wins since last Wednesday and look to capture their first win of the season against an Atlantic Division opponent.
