Brentford’s Toney Drops Liverpool Bombshell

Ivan Toney, Brentford’s star striker and England international, has offered some candid insights into his footballing affections and future ambitions.

Despite currently serving an eight-month suspension due to a staggering 232 breaches of the FA’s betting regulations, Toney hasn’t let the situation silence him. Unable to play for club or country until 16 January, 2024, he’s taken the opportunity to voice his thoughts on other platforms.

While appearing on the Diary of a CEO podcast hosted by Steven Bartlett, Toney was open about a myriad of subjects, including his passion for football and where his allegiance lies.

The conversation inevitably steered towards his career aspirations and his personal affiliation to clubs. Steven Bartlett queried, “When you say the right club, you’re not talking about Liverpool, are you? I heard you’re a Liverpool fan…”

Toney didn’t mince words, responding:

“I’ve been a Liverpool fan my whole life. I’ve liked Arsenal for the way they play and how passionate their fans are, but I’m a Liverpool boy at heart.”

His revelation makes one wonder if the corridors of Anfield could be calling. Toney hinted he wouldn’t dismiss offers from top-tier clubs, suggesting Brentford’s manager, Thomas Frank, is well-aware of his aspirations. Emphasising the importance of the next step, Toney added his next club would need to be “the right one”.

Premier League Prodigy

Toney’s talent isn’t in question. Celebrated as one of the Premier League’s sharpest strikers, he boasted a formidable tally of 20 league goals for Brentford in the previous season. This achievement placed him third in the coveted Golden Boot race, only outdone by Erling Haaland’s 36 and Harry Kane’s 30 goals. Such prowess led to speculation about a lucrative move for the 27-year-old this summer. Unfortunately, his ban may have pressed pause on any imminent transfer prospects.

Given his evident admiration for Liverpool, turning down a proposal from the Reds might prove a challenge for Toney. However, with the likes of Darwin Nuñez, Cody Gakpo, and Diogo Jota already showcasing their calibre upfront, combined with Toney’s existing ban, his Merseyside dreams may have to simmer a little longer.

One thing’s certain, the Premier League is rife with surprises, and Toney’s journey is one to watch.
