The Golden Boot is probably the most famous individual award in the Premier League but what about the love for the playmakers? Well they battle it out for the Premier League Playmaker of the Season award, an award that has only been around since the 17/18 season.
As you all expect, Kevin de Bruyne is the king of this award having won 50% of the Playmaker of the Season trophies. Here’s all the previous winners…
The odds have been released for this award for the 23/24 season so we’ll be taking a look at the betting market and talking you through the odds.
Well as we said at the start, this man is the king of this award so it should be no surprise to see him right at the top of the market at 13/8. Kevin De Bruyne is arguably the greatest playmaker the Premier League has ever seen and even after a bad season, he’ll most likely be racking up double figures in the assist column.
On top of his genius playmaking skills, Manchester City simply score a shed load of goals. Erling Haaland’s 36 goals scored in 35 Premier League games was the most scored in one campaign by any player and on top of that, they have, Julian Alvarez, Phil Foden, and Jack Grealish who are all partial to a goal. Manchester City scored 94 goals in 38 games last year with De Bruyne assisting 16 of those. If City are to score as many goals as they did last year, it’d be crazy to not see De Bruyne winning this award for a fourth time.
As far as full-backs go, no one provides more than Trent Alexander-Arnold when it comes to playmaking. In 198 Premier League games Trent has assisted 54 times which is insanely impressive for a defender.
Trent has never won this award but has come very close on a number of occasions with the right-back recording double digit assists in three Premier League campaigns.
Trent is the second favourite for the award this upcoming season at 9/1, he’s always going to be right up there for assists and with Liverpool only improving their squad, this could be a great bet.
Bukayo Saka: 10/1
Bukayo Saka had a stunning 22/23 season where he scored 14 times and assisted on 11 occasions. He also helped bring Arsenal to a second-place finish.
Saka is about as versatile as it gets at the moment and can play on either sides of the pitch and even drop down to left-back if needed. Arsenal have a shed-load of talent in their squad and with the addition of Kai Havertz, they’ve added another goalscorer into their squad which will only bolster Saka’s claims to more assists.
Arsenal are expected to have another good campaign in the Premier League and Saka will no doubt be at the heart of it if they do.
Jack Grealish completed club football last year and was an important player in Manchester City’s treble. Whilst he may have only assisted on seven occasions, Grealish was making chance after chance for the City squad.
However, I don’t see a world in which Grealish wins this award with De Bruyne in the squad. Grealish is a fantastic player don’t get me wrong, but he isn’t the heart of City’s playmaking like KDB is and thus, I don’t think 10/1 for Grealish is good value.
Mohamed Salah: 13/1
Whilst Salah is more known for his goal scoring prowess than his playmaking ability, the Egyptian consistently racks up a fair amount of assists in the Premier League and he’s priced at 13/1 to win the Playmaker of the Season award.
Salah has hit double digit assists in five out of his six Premier League campaigns with Liverpool with his highest tally reaching 14 assists. 13/1 could be a decent price if you fancy Liverpool to start banging in the goals.
