Erling Haaland’s Worthy Challengers

36 goals in 35 appearances is a frankly stupendous return, particularly in a debut season in the most competitive league on the planet.

Then again, Erling Haaland’s legitimacy as an actual human being is called into question more often than not, and his goalscoring exploits from last season certainly transcended anything we have witnessed before.

If it wasn’t for the Norwegian taking the league by storm, Harry Kane’s sensational season in front of goal may have received more plaudits. His 30-goal haul would’ve been enough to finish top goalscorer in all but three of the last nine seasons, and it is made all the more impressive given Tottenham‘s turbulent, toxic season.

He is still as long as 7/1 according to BetUK’s latest odds, which could present excellent value if Daniel Levy can fend off strong interest from Bayern Munich and tie him down for another year in north London.

Elsewhere, two-time Golden Boot winner Mohamed Salah can simply never be counted out. The Egyptian held the single-season record for a 38-game season until Haaland burst on the scene, and his 19 goals last season in a struggling Liverpool side went somewhat under the radar.

Further Down the Market

It remains to be seen how much of the responsibility Marcus Rashford will have to shoulder in front of goal next term, with Manchester United desperate in their pursuit of a recognised ‘number nine.’

He equalled his career-best league tally of 17 while adding a further 13 in all competitions – if he can tap into that rich vein of form from the off, he could be one to keep an eye on at 16/1.

Liverpool’s xG machine Darwin Nunez could be a terrifying prospect if he tucked away half as many chances as he wastes, but when, or if, he eventually finds a goalscoring rhythm he could be a problem for opposition defenders. A wildcard selection perhaps.

There are few other names on the list who have the necessary pedigree to get close to the likes of Kane and Haaland, but Chelsea’s latest acquisition, Christopher Nkunku, is somewhat of an unknown quantity.

He has been prolific in Germany, hitting 20 and then 16 in the previous two seasons, and his rapid pre-season integration suggests he is raring to go.

One price that undoubtedly caught our eye however, is Gabriel Martinelli at 66/1. Even just a low-stakes flutter might be worth taking a chance.

Arsenal will be even more dangerous than last season by the looks of it, and their top scorer last season, Martinelli, is blossoming into an explosive yet increasingly mature winger.

15 goals in the league from the left-side of their attack is a commendable return, and it would come as no surprise to the 22-year-old surpass that tally next season.
