By scoring 36 goals in the top flight last season, Erling Haaland broke a Premier League record.

It is strange to think now, but for a time last season many wondered whether Manchester City were a better team without Haaland.

It is true that there were a few games in which the Norwegian’s team-mates struggled to play to his strengths, but a return of 52 goals in all competitions tells its own story.

City do not spread the goals around as much as they used to, but that hardly matters when you have a world-class marksman at the top of the pitch.

Haaland stayed free of injury last season and he might not be so lucky this time around. That is probably the main question mark over his ability to retain the Golden Boot.

If he stays fit for the majority of the campaign, it is hard to see Haaland finishing anywhere other than top of the scoring charts.

Because of Haaland’s record-breaking brilliance, Kane’s efforts went a little under the radar last season.

The Tottenham legend found the back of the net 30 times in the top flight, equalling his best ever tally from 2017/18.

That was a remarkable achievement given how dysfunctional Spurs were for much of the season, particularly in 2023.

Kane has shown over several years that he knows what it takes to score plenty of goals in the Premier League.

The main doubt is whether he will even be competing in England’s top flight this season. 

Bayern Munich are keen to bring Kane to the Bundesliga, but Tottenham are unlikely to sell the man who looks set to succeed Hugo Lloris as club captain.

Improved Liverpool will rely on Mohamed Salah for goals (bet365)

Liverpool had a disappointing season last time out. A fifth-place finish means they will be absent from the Champions League in 2022/23.

But the Reds rallied towards the end of last term and their work in the summer transfer market shows they are serious about challenging for major trophies again.

Salah remains as important as ever to their chances of success. He has never scored fewer than 19 goals in a Premier League campaign since he moved to Anfield in 2017, a hugely impressive feat of consistency.

The Egypt international remains one of the best players in the English game and he is rightly among the leading candidates for the Golden Boot.

If Liverpool have a good season, expect Salah to score numerous goals.
