In-form Inter can expose hosts
Inter Milan, runners-up to Manchester City in last season’s Champions League, kick off their Group D campaign with Wednesday’s trip to Real Sociedad, who finished fourth in La Liga in 2022-23.
Inter have made a blistering start to the season in Serie A, winning their first four matches, including a 5-1 derby rout of AC Milan on Saturday, and they will be aiming for another memorable European run under coach Simone Inzaghi.
Inter came through a brutal Champions League group last season, finishing second to Bayern Munich but qualifying for the round of 16 ahead of Barcelona.
They kept five clean sheets in six knockout ties against FC Porto, Benfica and Milan, beating their city rivals in both legs of the semi-final to set up a showdown with Manchester City in Istanbul.
City were overwhelming favourites, but Inter pushed them hard in a 1-0 defeat, forcing goalkeeper Ederson into a couple of cracking late saves, and they should be too slick for Sociedad here.
Before their defeat by City, Inter enjoyed a run of 11 wins in 12 games in all competitions, including a 2-1 victory over Fiorentina in the Coppa Italia final.
They have maintained that hot streak at the start of this season, winning their first four league games by an aggregate score of 13-1.
Sociedad have won just one of their first five in La Liga, despite taking the lead in four of those matches, and their lack of ruthlessness could prove costly against a classy Inter side.

Prolific Martinez can strike again
Inter captain Lautaro Martinez, surprisingly, was not among the goalscorers in the 5-1 weekend win over Milan, having scored five times in the Nerazzurri’s first three Serie A matches.
Henrikh Mkhitaryan struck twice, while Hakan Calhanoglu, Davide Frattesi and impressive summer signing Marcus Thuram were also on the scoresheet, but Argentina ace Martinez should be the main danger to Sociedad’s defence.
He finished last season with 20 goals in 35 club appearances after returning from Argentina’s triumphant 2022 World Cup campaign, so he looks a big price to find the net in San Sebastian.

Visitors to dominate corner count
Inter’s run to last season’s final was built on defensive excellence, although they were involved in a couple of 3-3 draws against Barcelona and Benfica.
Another entertaining game is expected on matchday one as Inter forwards Martinez and Thuram are in fine form and the hosts also pose a goal threat.
Japan winger Takefusa Kubo has scored three times in five La Liga outings this term and Sociedad’s last two results were a 2-1 defeat at Real Madrid and a 5-3 home win over Granada, so over 2.5 goals is a solid bet-builder selection.
Inter should be backed to take more corners than their hosts. Their wing-backs love to get forward and they have won 21 corners to their opponents’ eight in their first four league games, also winning the flag-kick battle 4-2 in June’s Champions League final against Manchester City.
Sociedad centre-back Robin Le Normand has had an eventful start to the season, scoring an own goal against Granada and picking up three yellow cards in five appearances.
He can expect a difficult evening against Inter's livewire front two and adding Le Normand to be shown a card to the bet builder boosts the odds to a juicy 12/1.
