Red Sox rumors: Is club finally serious about Rafael Devers extension?

Rafael Devers is a free agent after the 2023 season. The Boston Red Sox are trying to secure him to an extension of at least seven seasons. There are conflicting reports regarding the status of the negotiations.  MassLive’s Chris Cotillo reports that there are no active talks between the Red SOvers and Deres. Alex Speier of Boston Globe reports there have been no meaningful discussions of an contract extension.

Devers is negotiating a contract extension with the Red Sox. He is a star prospect but his statistics don't scream 'superstar'. He finished the season with 27 home runs and 88 RBI. The team finished last in the AL East and has several players hitting free agency. Devers can afford to be patient and wait to see how Chaim Bloom's plan unfolds. He might sign a long-term deal with Boston. It's possible the team wants to improve the roster. They have room in budget but also several holes to fill. devers' Dominican friends are free agents. Their reports suggest that the reports are true.

Pujols and Gomez didn't come up with similar reports about a 7+ year deal. Devers made $11.2 million this season in his second year of arbitration eligibility. He should expect a raise to around $18 million if he goes through the process for a third time. Boston could pay him $20 million for the first year and increase his salary to somewhere between $30-35 million per year for remaining years.
