Reds vs Giants Prediction & Picks (Aug. 28): SF Stays in Wild-Card Hunt

Monday, August 28’s MLB schedule is action-packed, featuring a West Coast matchup between the Cincinnati Reds and San Francisco Giants. The Reds vs Giants regular-season series is tied 2-2 heading into tonight’s matchup, upping the stakes to what’s the beginning of a three-game series.

The Giants continue their homestand following yesterday’s 8-5 win over the Atlanta Braves that saw J.D. Davis and Patrick Bailey combined for five RBIs. Meanwhile, the Reds hope to get back on track after losing three of four games to the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Tonight’s Reds vs Giants matchup also brings its fair share of betting opportunities to the table. Fortunately, Betting News has everything you need ahead of the action, including the latest odds and betting picks.

Reds vs Giants Preview

You only have to go back to last month to find when these teams most recently collided. While the Giants were victorious in the first two encounters at the Great American Ball Park, the Reds got revenge by winning the final two games while holding the visitors to three runs on aggregate.

Having said that, the Giants have done a good job at owning the NL Central, going 9-2 in its last 11 matchups against the division. At the same time, they’ve lost seven of their last 10 games overall.

The Reds are also somewhat of a mixed bag, though. On one hand, they’re 7-3 in their 10 previous games played on a Monday. On the other, they’ve dropped 12 of their last 16 National League games.

This game is also huge when it comes to the clubs’ playoff chances. The Reds and Giants both enter tonight’s contest 1.5 games back of the Arizona Diamondbacks for the final NL wild-card spot, meaning neither side can afford to make mistakes.

When it comes to the pitching matchup, there’s no doubt that Cincinnati has the edge.

Left-handed starter Andrew Abbott has produced results lately, going 4-1 with a 4.06 ERA and 42 strikes over 37 2/3 innings in his last seven starts. He’s also lost just once with a 3.51 ERA in eight previous road starts this season.

On the other side, all eyes are on Kyle Harrison to see how he fares in his second-ever MLB appearance. He made his debut against the Philadelphia Phillies on August 22, allowing two runs on five hits with five strikeouts over 3 1/3 innings in a 4-3 loss.

Although both teams have found success against left-handed pitchers this season, the Giants’ winning percentage against southpaws (60%) is noticeably better than that of the Reds (52.6%).

Reds vs Giants Prediction and Picks

  • Reds vs Giants Prediction: Giants 6, Reds 3
  • Reds vs Giants Picks: Over 8 Total Runs (Best Value: -120 on Bovada ) & Andrew Abbott Under 5.5 Strikeouts (-135 on Bovada)

The Giants are in the better spot to walk out with tonight’s win. I just can’t bring myself to trust the Reds after dropping three of their last four games while allowing 22 total runs in the last three alone. Besides, Harrison is due for a bounce-back start.

Taking the over on the 8-run total is also a decent idea. After all, the Reds and Giants have experienced the over in four of their last six games, respectively. With both sides also having success against lefties, I expect a lot of action from the batter’s box.

As for a player prop, let’s go with the under on Andrew Abbott’s 5.5-strikeout total. He’s finished with the under in three of his last four starts and considering that San Francisco knows how to handle southpaws, Abbott might have issues tallying Ks tonight.
