Robin Goodfellow's racing tips: Best bets for Saturday, September 2

Mail Sport's racing expert Robin Goodfellow delivers his tips for Saturday's meetings at Sandown, Beverley, Chester, Chelmsford City, Newton Abbott and Wolverhampton.

Saturday's feature action comes at Sandown, where Lord Protector (nap) holds strong claims in the Virgin Bet Handicap (3.0). The stable of Ralph Beckett is in form and this gelding has career figures of 121 at Sandown.

The five-year-old won on his penultimate start off a mark of 94 before finishing sixth at the Qatar Goodwood Festival last time out.

He is now rated 98 but this return to Sandown will suit and he can hopefully continue his stable’s good recent run. In the concluding race on the card, Safari Dream (nb) will appreciate the drop back to the minimum trip, having slightly disappointed over six furlongs on his latest start.

The Rod Millmantrained gelding won twice over this course and distance last season — including off a mark of 82 — and he should run well off only a two-pound higher mark in this race.

THE DATABANK

RACE OF THE DAY

The Virgin Bet Solario Stakes has a track record of producing a good horse, with a roll of honour which includes Oh So Sharp (1984), Kingman (2013), Masar (2017) and Too Darn Hot (2018). Charlie Appleby, who has won the race twice in the past six years, saddles Aablan. Mortlake, a five-length winner at Leicester, has a Group One entry in the Dewhurst Stakes.

JOCKEY TO FOLLOW

OISIN ORR makes a foray south for his boss Richard Fahey with good chances on MAYWAKE (Sandown, 1.50) and MIDNIGHT MILE (Sandown, 2.25). Orr has a strike rate of just over 20 per cent.

TRAINER TO FOLLOW

Daniel and Claire Kubler have had six wins in the last fortnight at a strike rate of close to 40 per cent. They run ANDALEEP (Sandown, 3.00), PERCY’S LAD (Chester, 1.35) and AIRA FORCE (Chelmsford, 7.15).

BIG DAY FOR…

Co-trainers Peter Charalambous and James Clutterbuck, who run APOLLO ONE (Beverley, 2.40) in the Listed Bullet Sprint Stakes. The gelding deserves a break after second places in the Wokingham Stakes at Royal Ascot and the Stewards’ Cup at Glorious Goodwood. Standing in his way are two former winners of this race — Judicial and Tis Marvellous .

WHAT’S IN A NAME

DODDIE’S IMPACT (Sandown, 4.45)

Named after Doddie Weir, a portion of his prize money for winning the Brocklesby Stakes in April was donated to the late Scottish rugby player’s MND fundraising foundation.

WATCH OUT FOR

MONTEROSA (Sandown, 4.10)

Her dam won the 2019 Oaks and this filly has an entry in the Group One Fillies’ Mile at Newmarket in October. She is expected to take a step forward from her debut when she was not far off a place finish.

HORSES FOR COURSES

The climb to the finish line at Sandown seems to suit LORD PROTECTOR (Sandown, 3.00). He has won on two of his three starts at the track.

TRAINER TARGET

Sir Michael Stoute has won the Atalanta Stakes at Sandown three times in the past 10 years. He goes for glory again with 2022 winner POTAPOVA (Sandown, 2.25).

PERFECT PARTNERS

Ben Curtis has an excellent record when teaming up with Charlie Hill, with 13 wins from 44 rides showing a £1 level stake profit of £14.10. That includes three wins from six rides at Beverley, where they join forces with FULL REGALIA (4.25).

BEST RACE FOR FAVOURITES

Seven favourites have won the 3.38 at Sandown in the past 10 years.

TOP PRIZE-MONEY EARNERS

BEVERLEY: TIS MARVELLOUS (2.40) — £375,925; SANDOWN: PURPLEPAY (2.25) — £288,809.
