San Diego Padres playoff odds hit season-low after Arizona Diamondbacks sweep

After a double-header on sweep on Saturday ahead of Tropical Storm Hilary impacting the San Diego area, things couldn't be more gloomy for the San Diego Padres on an unexpected Sunday off day.

Ahead of a three-game series with the Miami Marlins beginning on Monday night at Petco Park, the Padres find themselves faced with the possibility that the hope of a rally to make the 2023 postseason that once was a flame is merely a flicker.

After losing three of four to Arizona in what was a pivotal home series for the Padres, San Diego's postseason odds now stand at a season-low 12.2 percent per FanGraphs. Compare that to the 85.3 percent where the Padres stood on March 29 and it's easy to see just how disappointing this season has been.

Perhaps it's even more of a gut punch that that 85.3 percent chance to make the postseason was the highest of any National League West team on March 29. The Los Angeles Dodgers, a team that now has a 100 percent chance to make the playoffs according to that same graph, stood at 71.2 percent.

It's been a dramatic fall for the Padres, and it's been even more painful considering San Diego actually bought at the MLB trade deadline. The New York Mets, a team that has often been compared to the Padres this season as both have been preseason darlings that have underperformed in massive ways, enter Sunday just a half-game behind San Diego in the Wild Card standings. Yes, a team that sold off pieces to get prospects for the future is doing almost as well as the Padres, a team that added on in a last-minute effort to turn the season around.

It didn't happen, and nothing was a bigger sign of that than Saturday's sweep that likely was another (and perhaps final) nail in San Diego's postseason coffin.
