Sevilla vs Manchester United match preview

After a simply ridiculous and inexplicable first leg at Old Trafford last Thursday, this tie is wide open.

Manchester United looked set to cruise into the semi-finals, leading 2-0 after 20 minutes a week ago, courtesy of Marcel Sabitzer’s brace.

It remained 2-0 for over an hour, with Antony coming close to a third, thwacking his shot against the post.

Then, with six minutes remaining, came the game-changing moment, with Jesús Navas’ cross deflecting off both Tyrell Malacia and David de Gea before sneaking in.

When, in stoppage time, Youssef En-Nesyri’s header, that was going miles wide, hit Harry Maguire’s face and ricochet into the bottom corner.

So, out of nowhere, it finished 2-2: Sevilla in the Europa League really is football heritage.

Will the record winners now complete the comeback, or will it be Manchester United who are facing Juventus or Sporting in the semis?

Sevilla are six-times winners of this competition, all coming since 2006, only entering the tournament ten times during this period.

In fact, los Nervionenses have never featured in the UEFA Cup/Europa League quarter-finals and not gone on to lift the trophy.

This season though they’re well below per, emphasised by the fact José Luis Mendilibar is their third manager of the campaign.

Los Hispalenses beat fellow-strugglers Valencia 2-0 on Sunday night, Loïc Badé and Suso the scorers, a win that propels them up to 13th in La Liga, on the cusp of safety.

Thus, with Sevilla not going to qualify for Europe domestically, only a brave person would back against them winning a record-extending seventh Europa League.

Since last winning this competition themselves in 2017, all six of Manchester United’s European campaigns have been ended by Spanish opposition, beaten by Sevilla themselves in 2018 and 2020.

So far this season though, Erik ten Hag’s side have already beaten Real Sociedad, Barcelona and Real Betis, winning across Seville just 35 days ago.

The Red Devils beat Nottingham Forest 2-0 on Sunday, their third consecutive Premier League victory, seeing them jump above Newcastle into third.

With the Carabao Cup in the bag and an FA Cup semi-final against Brighton to come on Sunday, Man United are still chasing a cup treble.

Sevilla have only ever lost seven of 111 European matches at Estadio Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán, so will ten Hag’s team add their name to that very short list?

Sevilla team news

José Luis Mendilibar heavily rotated for the first tie, with Sunday’s trip to Valencia in mind, making it even more of a miracle that they came away with a draw.

Having won at Mestalla at the weekend, leaving Sevilla eight points clear of the drop zone, expect their strongest XI to be on show here.

Jesús Navas and Youssef En-Nesyri changed the game off the bench at Old Trafford, so both will start this time.

Gonzalo Montiel is suspended, after being booked in the first leg, but Navas would’ve started at right-back anyway.

In goal, Marko Dmitrović has started all three league games under Mendilibar, so it’ll be intersting to see if Yassine Bounou keeps his place.

Predicted XI (4-5-1): Bounou; Navas, Gudelj, Badé, Acuña; Fernando, Jordán, Suso, Rakitić, Bryan Gil; En-Nesyri.

Manchester United team news

Erik ten Hag comes into this tie with plenty of selection issues.

First, Bruno Fernandes is suspended, having been shown his third Europa League yellow card of the season during the first leg.

Then, both centre-backs Raphaël Varane and Lisandro Martínez went off injured a week ago; the former will be out for weeks, while the latter is set to be sidelined for months after having surgery on Tuesday.

So, as way the case at the City Ground on Sunday, Victor Lindelöf will partner Harry Maguire at the back.

With Luke Shaw out and Tyrell Malacia a doubt, Diogo Dalot could continue to fill-in at left-back.

In midfield, Marcel Sabitzer sustained an injury in the warm-up at the City Ground, which saw Christian Eriksen start for the first time since January.

If Sabitzer isn’t fit, Fred will come in alongside Casemiro, with Scott McTominay also out.

Top-scorer Marcus Rashford has travelled, but is unlikely to start, so Anthony Martial will lead the line, against the team he made 12 appearances for during an underwhelming loan spell this time last year.

Predicted XI (4-3-3): de Gea; Wan-Bissaka, Maguire, Lindelöf, Dalot; Casemiro, Fred, Eriksen; Antony, Sancho, Martial.
