SF Giants offseason: Will they get cute?
Farhan Zaidi wants to improve the team this winter. The team has a lot of money coming off the books. They have a bad record in the field. J.D. Davis, Alex Cobb, Camilo Doval, John Brebbia, Brandon Belt and Joc Pederson could be traded. They could also make some calculated gambles. It's possible they will make a trade. If they do, it will bring them closer to their preferred payroll shape. For now, they are open to any scenario that makes the club better. Jim Bowden suggests they might have to have $200 million payroll in 2023.
Pederson enjoyed playing close to home for the Giants.
Farhan Zaidi's player development pipeline is clogged up. The Giants will probably wait one more year to see if the pipeline unclogs itself. Tommy La Stella was a complete disaster. They will be walking away from $11.5 million if they cut him. The Tommy Loeys and Cobbs of the world have been good for the Giants. Aaron Judge and Carlos Rodon are good players. A seventh year on Judge or a fourth or fifth year for Roden exceeds the risk tolerance. Giants want to get better by acquiring obviously good and developing players, but fans want them to focus on the process.
