Sharks vs Ducks Picks, Predictions & Odds Tonight

The San Jose Sharks have been abysmal all season but picked up their first shutout of the season last night. The offense still looked horrendous though, and our NHL picks don't expect that to change tonight.

The San Jose Sharks and Anaheim Ducks will head to the All-Star break following tonight’s battle of the two worst teams in the Pacific Division. Despite the Sharks blanking the Kraken last night, the Ducks are sitting as decent -185 favorites on the moneyline.

With a 10-day break on the horizon and coming off a 2-0 win last night, I’m happy betting on any Unders in a game that might not see many whistles or effort. The sand and sun are calling out to both teams tonight and this game would be on run-time if the players and referees had a say.

I break down the NHL odds and offer my free NHL picks for the Sharks vs. Ducks on January 31.

Sharks vs Ducks predictions

Last night was one of the worst products the league has seen all year. The Blue Jackets and San Jose Sharks both posted shutouts (their firsts of the season) and neither of the four teams scored until the third period.

With the All-Star break coming, these guys are checked out and I don’t blame them. Both teams tonight are off until February 10 and the sun and fun of planned vacations are calling.

The Sharks somehow have a team total of 2.5 that is paying -115 for the Under. They won last night and still hit this Under. This Under has a better than 50% win rate tonight in this spot, in the second game in as many nights, and with a break coming. San Jose is also missing Mikael Granlund and Tomas Hertl.

This is one of the worst offensive teams in hockey that’s scoring 1.94 goals per game since Christmas which ranks 31st in the league. The Sharks own a 40% xG% at 5-on-5 over that same time and have scored fewer than three goals in 34 of their 50 games on the season.

San Jose has 14 wins on the year and four have been by scoring fewer than three goals.

The Sharks did beat the Anaheim Ducks 11 days ago at home as a +120 home dog, but that wasn’t on the second game of a back-to-back and a 10-day vacation on the horizon. The best thing that happened to this team total Under 2.5 last night is the Sharks won. They can lay an egg tonight and still feel decent heading into the break.

The visitors have the worst power play in hockey since Christmas at 6.3%, but I’m not expecting many whistles tonight in the final game of the league before the ASB.

The Ducks are far from a good defensive team, allowing 3.56 goals per game since the last break, but that is priced in here. I’m expecting to see low scoring across the board tonight and outcomes that mirror last night’s results.

It’s been an awful first half of the year San Jose, no need to change things up with the Bahamas on deck.

My best bet: Sharks team total Under 2.5 (-115 at bet365)

Sharks vs Ducks same-game parlay

Sharks team total Under 2.5Logan Couture Under 2.5 shots on goalLeo Carlsson Under 0.5 points

The Sharks could not show up tonight and still feel okay going into the break after last night's 2-0 win, their first shutout win of the campaign. A high-scoring game is not expected here and I don't expect many whistles and penalties.

Logan Couture will play in his sixth game of the year after missing 40+ games. He has produced just six SOG in those five games and has no scoring talent around him to get him the puck. Outside of Chicago, San Jose has the least-talented roster in hockey.

Leo Carlsson has had good opportunities to produce playing on the top line and power play, but the rookie has points in just two games since returning to the lineup seven days ago.

Sharks vs Ducks moneyline and Over/Under analysis

Sportsbooks were a little unsure where to open this moneyline after the Sharks’ 2-0 win last night vs. the Kraken at home and the ASB break coming.

Some books opened Anaheim as a -210 favorite while others were around -190. Either way, the market has corrected to -185 and I don't know anyone who wants to lay the tax with the favorites. I don’t blame them as both clubs have been awful all year and are a combined 10-22 SU since Christmas.

I don’t expect either team to show up tonight (the refs included) but San Jose is coming off its best win of the season in terms of the final score, and even though the visitors are 4-1 SU over their last five, I want no part of this side. I hate the Ducks at this price and hate the Sharks in this spot a little less but let’s be honest, +155 is the side if I had to choose but that's on price alone.

The Over has surprisingly taken some money moving the Over roughly 10 points in most places since opening. That likely has to do with the previous meeting finishing 5-3 in favor of the Sharks.

That was a game that featured Mackenzie Blackwood in net for the Sharks and with him going last night, Kaapo Kahkonen will get the nod tonight vs. John Gibson. Kahkonen has a 3.27 GAA and a .908 SV% since December 1 which are actually better than his season-long numbers.

There is always more motivation for goalies to perform better in the games before big breaks which is what we saw last night as the four starting goalies combined for 94 saves on 96 shots.

This is the perfect spot for a mailed-in performance, especially for San Jose who played above expectations last night. The beach is calling and so is the Under 6.0. I’m not expecting many shots in this game either.
