Sharp Novices' Hurdle Tips: Fahey to strike at Cheltenham on Friday
Cheltenham returns this week as action takes centre stage at Prestbury Park on Friday and Saturday afternoon and one of the feature races of the two-day meeting is the Grade 2 Sharp Novices' Hurdle, which is an early trial for the Supreme Novices' Hurdle. Our man Steve Chambers previews Friday's contest and picks out his best bet for what should be a competitive renewal...
Won by the likes of Dodging Bullets, Cue Card and Altior in recent times, it's the latter of that triumvirate that went and used victory in this race as a springboard to victory in the Supreme Novices' Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival. A field of eight runners will head to the 2m 87y start for the 2023 renewal of the Sharp Novices' Hurdle dreaming of emulating the Seven Barrows star.
Peter Fahey's TOTO TOO is a 40/1 chance for the Supreme in March, but he has been on a steady incline on the track during his fledgling career and he's entitled to be towards the head of the betting for this event. A winner on his second start in bumpers, the six-year-old then cruised to a mightily-impressive six-length victory in a Navan maiden hurdle and he shaped like there could be a lot more to come over timber. Easily pulling clear of Barry Connell's Hashtag Pretender last month, Toto Too is sure to improve immeasurably for that hurdling experience and Fahey has often sent a few good ones over to Cheltenham and knows what is needed. There's no doubt that this is much tougher and he will need to improve, but he couldn't have done it any better at Navan and he could well be the one to beat here in what is a very trappy renewal.
Fergal O'Brien and Paddy Brennan are sure to have a host of leading contenders at Cheltenham this season and one interesting runner that lines up here for the team is Kamsinas, who was a fine winner on hurdling debut at Worcester. A facile eight-and-a-half length winner two weeks ago, the six-year-old will make a quick turnaround to line up in this Grade 2 contest and he's another with huge potential and has to go on the shortlist if he can continue to blossom on the track.

Another runner with a similar profile is Dan Skelton's Williethebuilder, who failed to get his head in front in bumpers, but was a very taking winner of a Uttoxeter novices' hurdle in September. Winning by 12 lengths that day, Skelton's raider didn't beat much, but couldn't have done it any better and is entitled to take his chance in Graded company in a race that may not possess a superstar.
Neil King's Lookaway is the experienced hurdler taking his chance here as he lines up for his sixth start over timber under Rules and having struggled at the start he's racked up back-to-back wins at Uttoxeter. Those successes did come back in May, so he's been off the track for a while and could improve for the outing. Olly Murphy's Act Of Authority kicked off his hurdling career with an easy 14-length success at Bangor and could well play a notable role in proceedings for this event and the son of Authorized has to be regarded a threat to Toto Too, who could be the one with the most potential lining up on Friday afternoon.
Punters will be raring to go at Prestbury Park and will be compiling their Cheltenham Tips in the lead-up to the racing on Friday and Saturday, but James Owen's Enthused, Jamie Snowden's Idy Wood and the Milton Harris-trained Parade Away look to have their work cut out at this level and it's the leading fancies in the betting that can fight it out with an Irish contender coming out on top.
