The 45th edition of the Torrey Pines Stakes is being held on Sunday. The winner of this race gets a $125,000 purse and a chance to enter the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint at Keeneland in November. Two of its trainers have won the race six times. This year's winner is H & E Ranch's Desert Dawn, who came second in the Clement L. Hirsch Stake on August 6. The other is Nick Alexander's homebred Lieutenant Dan, by Grazen. Dubai Key is the main opponent for him. He's been training steadily for conditioner Steve Miyadi.
The Torrey Pines Stakes is Race 5 on the 11-race Sunday program. The Green Flash Handicap is as Race 9. First post is 1 p.m. John Sadler has won the Torry Pins six times. He has visited the winner's circle after the race on seven occasions. Stellar Wind and Beholder have won this race.
