South Carolina Legislator Constitutional Amendment
Representative J. Todd Rutherford proposed a bill that would legalize sports betting, casino gambling and pari-mutuel betting on horse races in South Carolina.
The bill proposes to amend the constitution to allow gambling and gambling activities. It also proposes that such activities should be strictly regulated. The bill is the first step toward continuing a discussion that was started and stopped in 2022.
The next session of South Carolina lawmakers will start on January 10, 2023. They will have half a year to come up with a compromise on legal sports betting. Six states have legalized it, but South Carolinians are not. Legal sports gambling in the U.S. has generated $170 billion since its inception in May 2018. It has also brought in $12.8 billion in sportsbook revenue and $2 billion state taxes. South Carolina's lawmakers have a chance to redirect that revenue to their constituents.
