St. Louis Blues vs. Philadelphia Flyers Prediction, Preview, and Odds

The St. Louis Blues (31-26-3) have been a team full of inconsistency in 2023-24, but with the trade deadline approaching, they still find themselves in the fight in the Western Conference Playoff race, but with some of the hottest teams in the league ahead of them, they'll no doubt have to put it all together if they wish to feature in the post-season this year.

In this one they'll battle the surprising Philadelphia Flyers (32-23-7), who have excelled under John Tortorella this season, and despite lacking the big name stars that other teams have in the Eastern Conference, they've continued to grind out win after win, becoming a team that no one wants to face down the stretch.

Can the Blues stay in the fight in the Western Conference?

A few weeks ago, the St. Louis Blues had their hands on a Wild Card spot in the Western Conference playoff race, but after losses in five of their past seven games, they've slipped back to fifth place in the division, tied with the Calgary Flames for seven points back in the Wild Card race with only a few months in the year left. On the road this season, the Blues have struggled to a 13-15-2 record in 30 games played, and with a -13 goal differential, it appears as though they have their work cut out for them as they have some big decisions to make ahead of this weeks trade deadline, as they may be too far out of the race to make a true playoff push.

Leading the way for the ever resilient Blues in 2023-24 has been breakout star Robert Thomas with an impressive 69 points in 60 games played, with Jordan Binnington being solid in net as usual, posting a 2.88 GAA and a .910 save percentage. Last time out for the Blues was a much needed victory over the Minnesota Wild, with two points to Torrey Krug leading the way as Binnington did his job in net, stopping 22 of the 23 shots he saw on the night for the tight 3-1 victory.

Can the Flyers prove the doubters wrong in 2023-24?

The Philadelphia Flyers came into this season with little to no expectations, and they've been consistently grinding out wins all season long, and while they've not been perfect as of late, losing five of their past eight games, they're still good enough for third spot in the Metropolitan Division, with five points between themselves and the trailing New York Islanders. At home this season, the Flyers have posted a solid 16-13-2 record in 31 games played, and while their +3 goal differential is much lower than other Eastern Conference contenders, they've proven that no matter the situation, they're capable of grinding out big victories.

Leading the way for the Flyers this season is veteran star Travis Konecny with 54 points in 59 games played, and in net they've somehow survived with Samuel Ersson, who has posted a respectable 2.62 GAA and an .897 save percentage on the year. Last time out for Philadelphia was a much needed win over the Ottawa Senators, with two goals to Tyson Foerster leading the way as Felix Sandstrom stood up in net, stopping 24 of the 26 shots he saw on the night as the Flyers picked up the big 4-2 victory.

Rating:

Despite the Flyers struggles in recent years, they've still maintained an edge in this rivalry with the Blues, picking up an impressive 6-4 mark in their past 10 head-to-head encounters.

That record includes an impressive 4-2 win in their only matchup this season, and with the record being 2-2 in their past four matchups in Philadelphia, this one will certainly be close, but with the Blues struggles as of late and the Wild Card teams pulling away, they may have simply run out of steam, enough for the Flyers to pick up the big win.

Prediction: Philadelphia -130

Rating:

Both of these teams have had their ups and downs in net this season, and in their rivalry, they've seen some tight, low-scoring games as well as some barn burners, with the over sitting at 4-4-2 in their past 10 head-to-head encounters.

For the Blues, the over is just 4-5-1 in their past 10 overall games, with exactly four goals allowed per game in their past five played away from home, and for the Flyers, the over is 6-4 in that same time frame, with over 30 goals allowed in those 10 games, so expect the two offense's to rule the day in this crucial showdown.
