Surprise Teams From Each Power Six College Basketball Conference

The college basketball season is a month old. Non-conference play has taught us a lot about which teams have and will continue to defy preseason expectations. TWSN writers Will Locklin and Tom Seipp pick a surprise team from each Power Six conference in the land.

Missouri is 9-1 and was projected to finish 10th in the SEC. They lost to Kansas but their opponents are good. Their only notable win came on the road against Wichita State 88-84 in OT.

Mississippi State Bulldogs are 9-0 in the season. They have won all their games. Tolu Smith is the team's leading scorer.

Marquette has a 7-3 record and played against Power 6 teams Purdue, Wisconsin, Mississippi State, Baylor and Georgia Tech. The Golden Eagles lost to Wisconsin in an overtime. Marquette's next game is against a stacked Big East team.

St. John's is 10-1 in the Big East and ranked third in this week's rankings. The team's non-conference schedule ranks 336th in country. St.John's one Quad 1 loss is an 11-point defeat at Iowa State.

Virginia Tech is 9-1 and 1-0 in ACC play. The Hokies were picked to finish seventh in the conference during the preseason. Tech's lone loss came to the College of Charleston by two points. They beat Minnesota by double digits and UNC by 10 points in their next game.

Miami Hurricanes are 10-1 and ranked No. 25 in the Top 25. They made the Sweet 16 last year. Their first game is on December 20 against #2 Virginia.

Northwestern is 7-2 and has two road wins over Power 6 opponents. Northwestern was picked to finish near the Big Ten cellar. They also lost to No. 13 Auburn on a neutral court.

Maryland Terrapins are 8-2 on the season. They lost at Wisconsin and Tennessee, but they have already won against Illinois, Miami and Saint Louis.

Kansas State is 9-1 on the season and is in the top 50 of both KenPom and Net rankings. The team won the Cayman Islands Classic. They are expected to finish last in Big 12.

West Virginia is 8-2 in the Big 12 and has a feisty defensive team. The team has more firepower on offense than usual.

Arizona State Sun Devils are 10-1 in the Pac 12 and the top team in their conference. They beat Michigan in Legends Classic and Creighton on Monday night. They have a tough road ahead but could pull off more shockers as the year goes on.

Utah started the season 5-2 and won two games they were expected to. They beat Arizona 15-0 and Washington State in overtime. Now they are on a four-game win streak. Utah is 8- 2 and could play in the top 4 of the Pac 12 this year. Before conference play begins they will travel to BYU and host TCU.
