Sweet William Ebor Handicap Favourite With Goodwood Win

Sweet William is the new 5/1 favourite for the Ebor Handicap after winning the Summer Handicap in style at Glorious Goodwood on Saturday. You can check out the latest odds for the York feature further down the page.

Ebor Handicap has New Favourite in Sweet William After Goodwood Success

Training duo John and Thady Gosden won the Summer Handicap for the second year in a row on Saturday at Glorious Goodwood with Sweet William. He could now follow in the footsteps of stablemate Trawlerman, who built on success in this race last year with victory in the Ebor Handicap.

Rab Havlin successfully steered the Normandie Stud-owned four-year-old gelding to glory, winning by almost three lengths from Northumberland Plate fifth Adjuvant (see below):

While Normandie Stud supremo Philippa Cooper previously stated she’s not a big fan of the Ebor, the premier handicap at York races, there are reasons for Sweet William to turn up their under a penalty. Money is chief among them.

Winning the Ebor carries automatic entry to the Melbourne Cup, so that gives connections an additional incentive. With a 4lb penalty for his Goodwood success, Sweet William now has every chance of making the cut on the Knavesmire come 27 August.

Sweet William for the Ebor?

John Gosden is far from cold on the idea provided his exciting stayer can get into the race.

The Gosden stable has won the Ebor Handicap twice in the last five years. Prior to Trawlerman completing the double with the Summer Handicap, the yard triumphed in 2018 with Muntahaa. That renewal of the Ebor is best remembered for jockey Jim Crowley plotting a much wider course aboard the rest of the field on the winner.

It remains to be seen if an effective mark of 99, adding on the 4lb penalty to the current official rating of 95 for Sweet William is enough to get into York’s big handicap. A maximum field of 22 can line-up on the Knavesmire in the Ebor Festival’s eponymous race.
