Tennessee Sports Betting: The Best TN Betting Sites

Sports betting in Tennessee has been legal online and on mobile since November 2020. Check out the best betting sites for bettors in The Volunteer State.

Sports betting is permitted throughout Tennessee, although online and on mobile only. The first four sportsbooks went live in November 2020 following the approval of a sports betting bill by state legislatures in April 2019.

Casinos are not permitted in The Volunteer State and there are currently no plans to allow wagering from physical locations.  Tennessee is something of a trailblazer among Southern states, being the only one to have adopted legal online sports betting statewide.

This has clearly benefitted those leading operators with fantastic mobile applications, such as BetMGM, FanDuel, Caesars and DraftKings.

Online or mobile-only sports betting has been legal since April 2019 when The Volunteer State legislature passed the Tennessee Sports Gaming Act. Interestingly, despite allowing its approval, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee declined to add his signature to the bill.

Tennessee’s Sports Wagering Advisory Council (SWAC) was handed regulatory power over the state’s sports betting industry in June 2021. The SWAC took over the role from the Tennessee Education Lottery (TEL).

There are a growing number of mobile sportsbook operators licenced by The Volunteer State. These include some of the biggest names in American sports betting such as BetMGM, FanDuel, Caesars and DraftKings.

Retail gambling of any kind is currently illegal in the South-eastern state.

The permitted age for legal online sports betting in Tennessee is 21. This age restriction is very much in keeping with the majority of states nationwide.

The expanding bunch of active Sportsbooks offer all the major US sports such as football, basketball, baseball, hockey, and soccer. On top of this, there are myriad different sports available across the board, from athletics to darts. Retail betting is currently illegal in The Volunteer State, so the sports betting market is exclusively online and on mobile.

There is a healthy appetite for sports bettors in Tennessee, despite the lack of physical sportsbooks. Since the Sports Wagering Advisory Council took the regulatory reins on January 1, 2022, they’ve been processing several more sportsbook licence applications.

In the following February, Tennessee’s SWAC approved the licence of a tenth operator and it’s very unlikely to stop there. This growing list of approved sportsbooks shows real confidence in the trajectory of The Volunteer State’s market. It’s also great news for Tennessee sports fans, who will benefit from a competitive acquisition landscape.

With the mobile sportsbook apps being enhanced and improved to keep up with demand, Tennessee bettors will expect slick user experiences like that provided by app masters, FanDuel and DraftKings.

Early February obviously saw frenzied promotional offers around the Super Bowl, in what has to be one of the best times for Tennessee bettors to cash in, regardless of which teams are facing off.

Given its southerly location, it was understandable to see Tennessee politicians and lawmakers lag a little behind northern counterparts like Pennsylvania.

Nonetheless, in keeping with neighbours Louisiana, Mississippi, Arkansas, and North Carolina the state approved the legalization of sports betting in May 2020. The biggest restriction is the continued ban on any retail betting.

In November 2020 the first legal sportsbooks went live. Those operators quick off the mark included America’s sports betting power couple, aka DraftKings and FanDuel.

Nevertheless, concerns around responsible gambling have kept bricks-and-mortar casinos and sportsbooks off the table. Some residual scepticism has not prevented online sports betting from growing in The Volunteer State, though, with a tenth approved operator being licenced early in 2022.

More conservative attitudes towards Tennessee sports betting within the state are reflected in the lack of prop betting on college athletes.

With no major league baseball representation or national championship between its biggest pro football and basketball teams, it would be overstretching it to label Tennessee as a true sports destination.

The Titans were on the losing side of a Super Bowl at the turn of the century, while the raw pace and power of Derrick Henry almost helped secure a second AFC Championship in 2019.

Meanwhile, the Grizzlies’ modest NBA escapades are topped by a Conference Finals defeat in 2012/13 and are almost certainly eclipsed by the Tennessee Volunteers’ NCAA endeavours.

The team affectionately known as the Vols have six national championships to point out across their distinguished history.

Tennessee hockey fans also have NHL representation in the form of the Predators. The Nashville-based franchise almost crowned their relatively short history with a maiden Stanley Cup in 2016/17.

That Henry-inspired run to the sharp end of the playoffs coincided with the rise of a Patrick Mahomes-led Kansas City Chiefs. Bad timing it must be said.

However, a look further back in franchise history does bring up glory. Before the birth of the NFL, the franchise began life as the Houston Oilers.

The Oilers’ first two seasons in the old AFL, in 60 and 61, yielded immediate back-to-back AFL Championships.

It wasn’t until 1997 that the franchise moved to Tennessee, firstly becoming the Tennessee Oilers for a two-season spell before the Titans were born. That name switch so nearly produced glory at the very outset.

With influential Defensive end, Jevon Kearse starring in a dominant defense, the new kids on the block went all the way to Super Bowl XXXIV.  A seven-point deficit was enough for the St. Louis Rams to run out narrow winners.

Still, the good work started by head coach h Mike Mularkey has been continued by Mike Vrabel in recent times, with Titans fans getting very used to playoff football.

Tennessee sports bettors and Titans fans would be easily forgiven for dreaming the big one is within reach.

This Tennessee-based franchise began life as one of two Canadian teams inducted into the NBA back in 2001. The Vancouver Grizzlies then adopted their current name.

Memphis Grizzlies fans will fondly remember the ensuing Pau Gasol era. The Spanish power forward would go on to become a six-time NBA All-Star and gave some of his best seasons to the Grizzles between 2001 and 2008.

The Gasol legacy wasn’t complete when Pau left for the Lakers then either as younger brother Marc joined the franchise.

The younger sibling would help the Grizzlies advance to the Conference finals as he was named NBA Player of the Year in 2013. As has often been the case for the Grizzlies post-season aspirations, they were thwarted by the San Antonio Spurs.

More recently, the Grizzlies managed to blood another Rookie of Year in the form of point guard Ja Morant. In only his second full season in the NBA, the Utah Jazz were responsible for ending their post-season journey in the first round.

The 2013-2014 campaign saw great players like Shea Weber and Mike Fisher, grace the Bridgestone Arena, but all through the Predators’ history, there have outstanding players on the rink.

Finnish goaltender Pekka Rinne remains one of the most adored Predators players to date, having been ranked among the best net custodians in the league since his 2005 purchase.

Still one of the youngest franchisees in the NHL, the Predators have come close to Stanley Cup glory.

The Western Conference was bagged in 2016/17 before the Predators went on to face NHL royalty, the Pittsburgh Penguins, in the finals.

A 4-2 defeat was enough to crown the Penguins, but it showed that the Predators were a franchise to be reckoned with.

Although that brush with a national title remains the zenith of the team’s achievements to date, the prevalence of post-season hockey in the seasons before and after that back up this theory.

Playing out of the Thompson Boiling Arena, the Vols men’s basketball team have four retired jersey numbers. This is thanks to the court exploits of Dale Ellis, Allan Houston, Ernie Grunfeld and Bernard King, spread across the 70s, 80s and 90s.

While the Elite Eight round of the NCAA Tournament remains the ceiling of the men’s achievements down the years, the women’s team has no fewer than eight national championships to show off.

The Knoxville based University of Tennessee also boasts a famous football team. In their famous orange uniforms, the Vols play their football at the enormous 102, 455 capacity Neyland Stadium.

This is the biggest capacity in the Southeastern Conference and the fifth largest nationally. These guys are no strangers to Bowl victories and of the six claimed national championships, two are definitely recognised by the NCAA.
