It’s been a remarkable start to the punting year on the PGA Tour.

The five winners have been priced at 150/1, 350/1, 300/1, 150/1 and 80/1!

If anyone had three of those names written on their betting slips they’re probably about as excited as the galleries will be this week at TPC Scottsdale for the WM Phoenix Open.

It is a week like no other in golf when typically over 600,000 fans file through the gates.

The par-3 16th is famously a stadium hole entirely surrounded by corporate hospitality and bleachers.

Fans spend the day drinking, going wild when the golfers hit the tee, and then going berserk if anything exciting happens.

Any marshal holding up a “Quiet Please!” is not getting very far this week.

On the course we’re looking for quality ball strikers (nine of the last 11 winners were major champions or would become one) and bold ones too (the closing stretch features a par-5 and a short par-4 - they demand aggression).

Find our best picks for the WM Phoenix Open below.

Let’s keep this simple.

Justin Thomas has finished top six in each of his last four starts and is beginning to look close to his best.

He also really likes TPC Scottsdale, recording seven top 20 finishes in nine starts including being third in both 2019 and 2020, and fourth last year.

Scottie Scheffler is chasing the three-peat this week but we’ll take him on with two-time major champ JT.

Two years ago the exciting young American Sahith Theegala looked poised to make his winning breakthrough on the PGA Tour in this event.

He led by two shots at halfway, by one after 54 holes and the trophy was within touching distance as he played the 17th.

Then his drive caught a bad kick of a hump and agonisingly dribbled into the water hazard.

It was a tough experience but he had shown he had the flair to enjoy the raucous crowds, the game to attack the course and, as of September, he’s now a winner on the PGA Tour.

He also opened 2024 with second place in The Sentry on a course like this week which needs big shots.

A major win is not beyond him in the future and he’s 35/1 each way with bet365 paying eight places.

Are we due another big priced winner this week?

Let’s see if the American Tom Hoge can join the ranks.

At first glance he’s got only two top 25s from five tournament visits with a best of 14th.

But in four of those five starts he has sat inside the top 12 for most of the week.

He got his first win at this level two years ago and lifting another trophy is well within him.

He was sixth last week, his Approach stats have been superb in recent starts, and that’s a key part of the test this week.

He’s available at a tasty 95/1 each way (six places) with Spreadex.
