Jordan Thomspon v Alejandro Tabilo Head to Head

This will be the first career meeting between Jordan Thompson and Alejandro Tabilo.

Thompson Upsets Tsitsipas

Jordan Thompson pulled the biggest shock of the 2023 Indian Wells Masters after knocking out the second seed and one of the pre-tournament favorites Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Thompson pinched two tiebreaks to win 7-6 4-6 7-6 in two hours and 40 minutes of drama. It was just the second top-10 scalp of his career, and came hot on the heels of a dominant opening-round win over an accomplished Tour-level campaigner in Gael Monfils.

Thompson was perfect in the first set, holding all his service games and taking the tiebreak by a clean scoreline 7-0. The Australian World No. 87 might never play a better set of tennis than that. But Tsitsipas rallied in the second, breaking the Thompson serve twice, even though he ceded one break back, the insurance of a double break was enough to see him level.

The third set was a nail-biter which was decided in a tiebreak. Tsitsipas earned a minibreak to lead 2-0, but it was Thompson who arrived at match point first and held his nerve to round off a terrific win.

Tabilo Tames Cressy

Alejandro Tabilo also scored an unlikely win even though his was not so shocking. It was one of those days when Maxime Cressy threw everything at his opponent including the kitchen sink but still ended up on the wrong end of the scoreline.

Tabilo won 7-6 7-6, in two hours and 16 minutes. Neither player dropped their serve in both sets, with Cressy the closest to break his opponent, but could not convert on any of his four break points.

Cressy hammered 28 aces to 18 double faults, with Tabilo firing 10 aces to a single double fault. That many double faults proved Cressy’s undoing as Tabilo clinched the first set tiebreak easily.

The second-set tiebreak, however, was one for the ages, with Tabilo snatching it 15-13. Cressy had a look at five set points, and Tabilo spurned three match points of his own. But a couple of loose points on Cressy’s serve handed Tabilo the win in the end.
