Miami Open odds: Betting favourites and Canadian tennis players to watch

The second half of the Sunshine Double kicks off on March 22.

The latest: Carlos Alcaraz and Elena Rybakina won the men’s and women’s titles at Indian Wells and can add to their trophy case at the Miami Open. Canadians Bianca Andreescu and Felix Auger-Aliassime look to build on strong performances, while Leylah Fernandez and Denis Shapovalov try to find their game.

Miami Open odds: Men's singles

Tennis odds as of 12:21 p.m. on 03/21/2023.

Best men's Miami Open odds

The favourite: Carolos Alcaraz (+260)

There’s good reason to wager on Alcaraz winning the Miami Open.

The first is the fact that he just won the Indian Wells Open in dominant fashion. The 19-year-old did it without losing a single set.

He made easy work of the competition, especially in the final where he earned a convincing 6-3, 6-2 victory over Daniil Medvedev.

Alcaraz is also the reigning winner of the Miami Open, taking home last year’s tourney title after dropping just two sets. He’s the youngest man to win both legs of the Sunshine Double, and nobody would put it past him if he started building toward becoming the youngest to do it twice.

Canadian men's odds

Auger-Aliassime can feel good about his performance at Indian Wells, advancing all the way to the quarters before losing to Alcaraz, falling 6-4, 6-4.

The Canadian did impress in the match, however, showcasing the athleticism and skill that makes him one of the game’s rising stars.

His powerful serve was both his friend and enemy at the tournament. He fired off 36 aces in his four matches but was also responsible for 25 double faults.

Auger-Aliassime will be looking to avenge his short stint at last year’s Miami Open where he fell to Miomir Kecmanovic in the second round. The 22-year-old Auger-Aliassime has the fifth-best odds to win (+1,600) in 2023.

Shapovalov, meanwhile, will also be in action in Miami, but there’s less reason to be optimistic about his chances.

He crashed out in his first match at the Indian Wells event, losing to Frenchman Ugo Humbert in straight sets. Carelessness played a big part in his unravelling, as Shapovalov committed 14 double faults and 29 unforced errors.

He’s tied for the 17th-best odds to win (+5,000) but finds himself in a difficult quarter with top players like Alcaraz, Taylor Fritz and Holger Rune.

Miami Open odds: Women's singles

Tennis odds as of 2:04 p.m. on 03/20/2023.

Best women's Miami Open odds

The favourite: Iga Swiatek (+225)

After being the favourite to win the Indian Wells Open and advancing to the semifinal, Swiatek is the odds-on choice to win at Miami.

Switaek cruised to the semis at the first leg of the Sunshine Double without dropping a set. In her match against Rybakina, however, she was the one who failed to win a set.

Rybakina, the eventual tourney champ, won in straight sets against Swiatek for the second time this year.

There’s still plenty of reason to feel confident in Swiatek, though. She’s 16-4 on the hard court in 2023 and won the Qatar Open. The Polish tennis star ranks sixth in service points won percentage (64.1%) and first in return points won percentage (52.8%), per WTAtennis.com.

She’s also the defending champ at this tournament, making her the one to beat.

Canadian women's odds

Andreescu’s encouraging performance at Indian Wells offers some hope that she can go on a run at the Miami Open.

The Canadian defeated Peyton Stearns in the Round of 64 before falling to Swiatek in the Round of 32. It was in her loss that we saw her play some of her best tennis of the year, forcing Swiatek to tiebreak in the second set of their match before eventually losing in two sets.

Andreescu won 50% of her return games in the second set, a reminder of how talented she is in that aspect of the game.

The draw did Andreescu no favours, however, as she opens up against Emma Raducanu and will face Maria Sakkari if she advances.

As for Fernandez, she also lost in the Round of 32, falling in three sets to Caroline Garcia. She was inaccurate with her serve at Indian Wells, committing 17 double faults in two matches.

Despite owning an impressive 88-51 career record on the hard court, Fernandez is an underwhelming 9-6 on the surface in 2023.

Both Andreescu (+6,000) and Fernandez (+8,000) are long shots to win.
