The NHL season is long and tiring. Home teams have won 55% of the games over the last five seasons. The win rate dropped to 50% in the second half of back-to-back games.
Hockey is a chaotic sport that is heavily influenced by luck. The sport doesn't do a good job of rewarding skill. Shots and scoring chances matter more than goals in a small sample size.
Favorites won 64% of the games last season. The number of favorites with an implied win probability of 70% or higher has risen a lot over the last three seasons. In 2019-20, less than 5% featured a favorite that big, but that number jumped to around 10% in 2021-22 and to more than 15% last year.
