Thursday tips: How To Bet £20 on day three of Royal Ascot

Our man Harry Allwood tipped Dramatised (advised at 11-2) on Wednesday and shares his best bets for Thursday's action at Royal Ascot.

I tipped Walbank up at 5-1 on Monday for the Norfolk Stakes (2.30pm) and while he has attracted plenty of support since, I still think he’s the one to be on at a general 5-2 in the opener on Thursday. If you are looking to back one at a bigger price in the Norfolk Stakes, though, I wouldn’t put you off having a few quid each-way on Brave Nation who bolted up on debut at Doncaster in April in a decent time.

The youngster has loads of speed in his pedigree and is likely to race up with the pace here, so could surprise a few of the leading protagonists, but Walbank is taken to come out on top.

It is no shock that Post Impressionist has been heavily supported for the King George V Stakes (3.05pm) since Eldar Eldarov, who he finished second behind at Newcastle last time out, franked the form with victory in the Queen’s Vase on Wednesday.

However, he has been well found in the market now and preference is for Secret State who has been in my Racing TV Tracker since his promising debut in the Wood Ditton, a traditionally strong maiden which this son of Dubawi was sent off favourite for.

Watch how Secret State scored last time out

Charlie Appleby’s charge defeated Honiton, who finished third behind Eldar Eldarov and Post Impressionist on his next start, with ease when getting off the mark at Chester in May where he relished the step up to ten furlongs.

The further he went, the better he looked on that occasion and although he wasn’t as visually impressive at Nottingham last time out, he was racing over an inadequate trip of a mile, and it was no surprise William Buick sent him for home over three furlongs out.

The runner-up, Laasudood, has since won a handicap off a rating of 87 in good style, and that makes Secret State potentially well-treated off a rating of 93 here as I am certain he would have won easier had the race been over further.

This trip is sure to bring out further improvement in this well-bred colt, and he rates a bet at the 6-1 on offer.

Sea Silk Road heads the betting for the Ribblesdale Stakes (3.40pm), and the daughter of Sea The Stars certainly looked a Group performer in the making when creating a big impression on her second start.

She didn’t look as impressive when narrowly winning a Listed contest when last seen, but William Haggas said afterwards that she wasn’t in love with soft ground, and she remains with a huge amount of potential.

However, I would have made Magical Lagoon favourite for this contest based upon the strength of the form she has shown, and she’s also the one to beat on ratings.

Jessica Harrington’s filly stormed home to win a Group Three over a mile on her second start last season before finishing a respectable seventh in the Fillies’ Mile, the form of which has worked out extremely well.

Magical Lagoon returned with a narrow defeat at Navan

Magical Lagoon found only Concert Hall too good on her return to action at Listed level, and that rival was third in the Irish 1,000 Guineas on her next start before finishing fourth behind Tuesday in the Cazoo Oaks.

It is wise to think this trip will bring out the best in the selection, given she is by Galileo and a sister to winners who stayed further than 12 furlongs, and she’s a strong fancy at 5-2.

Wanees is held in high regard by connections and, after showing plenty of promise as a two-year-old last season, he returned with a narrow victory in the Esher Cup at Sandown off a rating of 84.

Although he only won by half a length there, he was certainly value for more than the winning margin suggests as he was the only contender to make up any ground from the rear in a race that was run at a steady tempo.

The way he made up an abundance of ground when asked for his effort was eye-catching, and a fast pace in the Britannia Stakes should suit. I expect him to be given a patient ride by Jim Crowley before being delivered late.

He wore a hood at Sandown, which is not applied here, and I hope that is a signal that he has begun to relax, as Charlie Hills said on Racing TV after his Sandown victory that he hasn’t been the easiest to train.

While there are plenty you can make a case for in this 30-runner field, Wanees gives the impression he could be ahead of the handicapper off a 7lb higher mark here, and he was a winner on good to firm ground last season. His draw in stall 21 shouldn't be an inconvenience, either.

Backing a horse at 9-2 in a 29-runner field may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but Montassib is a potential Group horse in a handicap here and a rating of 97 is likely to underestimate him in the Buckingham Palace Stakes (6.10pm).

The unbeaten four-year-old raced once as a two-year-old before he was off the track for 598 days and made the most of a good opportunity on his return to action in April on good to firm ground.

He then made his handicap debut at Sandown in a 0-100 contest off a rating of 87 and won with a huge amount to spare plus beat some decent yardsticks in the process.

The replay above is worth a watch to see how easily he travelled through the contest before quickening up in style on ground that probably wouldn’t have been in his favour.

A career best will be needed off a 10lb higher mark here, of course, but he’s three from three and I will be disappointed if we haven’t seen the best of him yet.
