13:50 Ascot – Kinross – 1pt @ 6/4

No prizes for originality in fancying Kinross to win and whilst Group race sprints are my favourite contests in which to find big priced selections, I think only circumstance should beat him. He’s more talented than all of these and is well-suited to both the C&D and conditions.

He bolted up in last year’s renewal of this race and hasn’t been far off that level on his last three outings, albeit over 7f. A couple of Group 2s came his way before he was unfortunate not to win the Foret for a second time, stopped in his run on ground that is lively enough.

It doesn’t take much to go wrong in a sprint to level the playing field even when you’re up against inferior opposition but he has all the tools needed to win this again. Of the others, Ocean Quest was interesting at a price. I’m just worried she’s drawn too far away from the main speed horses.

14:25 Ascot – Rue Boissonade – 1pt @ 9/1

Rue Boissonade has a bit to find with some of these on ratings but she’s lightly-raced with just six outings under her belt and has scope to improve again. Her penultimate start in the Vermeille yielded a very good fourth to Warm Heart and she filled the same spot on Arc weekend over 1m 6f.

Luck in-running wasn’t forthcoming on that occasion, chopped off when building some momentum after being outpaced. The ground was quick enough as well and I think both efforts hint that she’s capable of producing something better before long.

Today's ground can prove to be a help, Ascot’s test should be more suitable and if they go a consistent gallop up top and pull the hold up performers into it, she can at least hit the frame. It’s a wide-open contest and the 9/1 on offer isn’t a bad play.

16:25 Ascot – Raadobarg – 1pt @ 16/1

Raadobarg hasn’t lined up in a handicap since his first start of last season and he bolted up in the Irish Lincoln off 98 on that occasion. He’s 9lbs higher in the weights these days but has got plenty of form at Listed and Group 3 level since, including multiple placed efforts.

He bumped into an in-form Highland Avenue at Newmarket last week and wasn’t helped by being taken on in the lead early enough. I’d like to see more patient tactics employed and there will be an opportunity to seek cover should that be the route connections want to go down as well.

The track won’t be a problem, the ground is perfect and if he can get into a nice rhythm, I’m sure he’s capable of troubling these despite conceding weight to all bar one. He’ll run his race, as he almost always does, and it may be good enough to win. 16/1 is worth the risk.
