14:40 Catterick – Sacred Jewel – 1pt @ 20/1

Siding with Sacred Jewel involves a lot of speculation and could be a waste of our time, but if the ground is decent underfoot, she may bounce back. It was soft and good-to-soft for both of this season’s disappointing efforts and her form to date suggests that an ease does not suit.

It’s possible something was ailing her as well given that she hasn’t made it to the track in three months since her Redcar spin and if Julie Camacho can get her back to the level she showed at York last September, when a neck-second off a 2lb higher mark, she’d be a player today.

Her style of running lines up well with the demands of Catterick, where it often pays to be bang on the speed, and this level of opposition is weaker than she faced in most of her handicap attempts. It’ll either end well or badly, but I’m happy to find out at 18/1+. It’s overly generous.

15:10 Catterick – Gowanbuster – 1pt @ 25/1

Gowanbuster is similarly risky but has gone well when fresh before and this speedy 6f test could enhance his claims if he’s fit. The last block of racing he did came at Newcastle in January and February, four outings yielding a couple of second place finishes alongside a couple of mediocre efforts.

He tends to be in-and-out anyway, which is in line with him regressing from a peak mark of 80 to the 57 he runs off now, but some ability is still in the locker and the right set of circumstances can bring it out. There’s lots that he’ll enjoy about this test and, at 25/1, he’s too readily ignored in the betting.
