Tony Brassel's blackbook: $101 Golden Rose chance trials strongly

Big timers Nature Strip, Zaaki, Alligator Blood, Shinzo. We just didn't know where to look at last Friday's Rosehill trial session.

Star sire Snitzel had a big morning with several stand outs, Hawkes Racing produced three impressive unraced triallers, plus Zac Lloyd continued his rise through the ranks. Even in barrier trials.

Time to fine grab a select group for our blackbook, with a mixture of heavies, almost heavies and a few triallers clocking in last or near last.

Put these into your Racenet Blackbook and you'll receive an email whenever their trainers accept with them.

AMUR (Third, Rosehill Heat 4, 1030m)

Didn't win his trial but sure could have if given full throttle.

Zac Lloyd parked this leggy Snitzel colt second and was obviously asked not to get too serious.

After hitting the front down the running, Lloyd allowed the chestnut to breeze to the finish, enabling slow-starter Backrower to snatch the win.

It will be vastly different come race day and it's noticeable this last start Randwick Group 3 winner comes to hand quickly.

Won his first two starts in a five run career and he's genuine sire material for Godolphin. Mum is a half-sister to former Blue Army stand-outs Alizee and Astern.

FUTURES: $101 Golden Rose, $26 Caulfield Guineas, $26 Spring Champion Stakes, $26 Coolmore Stud Stakes, $15 Victoria Derby.

Very little between the first four!

COMMUNIST (Fourth, Rosehill Heat 1, 1000m)

In the red twice for wins at Hawkesbury and Newcastle and rolled Lindermann in Randwick's Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m).

We haven't seen the Russian Revolution gelding race since a 10th in Mr Brightside's Doncaster when he trekked wide with cover.

Now ticking over keenly at the trials, underlined by Friday's four lengths fourth behind Alligator Blood.

Tyler Schiller hardly pushed the button yet the bay was keen to get on with the job.

FUTURES: $15 Winx Stakes, $26 Memsie Stakes, $26 Makybe Diva Stakes, $26 Epsom Handicap, $26 Toorak Handicap, $26 King Charles III Stakes, $101 Cox Plate, $26 Golden Eagle, $26 Champions Mile, $26 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes.

INHIBITIONS (Third, Rosehill Heat 5, 1030m)

Another James Cumming-trained three-year-old, she was entitled to trial okay having already commenced her racing prep.

She was the one in Godolphin Blue, galloping in mid-air behind Taormina at Rosehill on July 22.

Zac Lloyd was aboard for that first-up run and at no stage could he find a safe gap to test her.

So, back to the trials for Zoustar's daughter last Friday, just to consolidate fitness.

Against more seasoned elders, Inhibitions handled the task like a professional behind the winner Too Much Caviar.

And Lloyd didn't position near the fence at any stage. No chance of claustrophia last Friday.

FUTURES: $51 Spring Champion Stakes

MAKARENA (Won, Rosehill Heat 17, 900m)

Perhaps the prettiest filly to do the rounds at Rosehill, the chestnut sports a distinctive blaze and a couple of long, white socks.

And she doesn't look a thing like her bay stakes-winning half-sister Missile Mantra.

Seemingly pacier than her big sister, the Snitzel filly has won her only two Rosehill trials, commencing last March.

Last Friday, Zac Lloyd parked her off the leaders then brought her with a late burst, only riding with moderate vigour.

This was a typical Team Hawkes hit out at the trials and the flashy miss will be hard to miss wherever she makes her debut.

FUTURES: $201 Golden Rose

NEW MANDATE (Sixth, Rosehill Heat 3, 900m)

Ran last of six in the classy heat won by Queen Of The Ball from Nature Strip.

Jason Collett had him rearwards from launch but he comfortably kept up with Group 1 winning stablemates Espiona and Militarize.

The six-year-old landed the Group 3 Hawkesbury Cup (1600m) last April to cap his six-start Aussie career so far.

Back home, his three wins were in the 1400m to 1600m range.

Keep in mind he's a winner first and second-up, plus he campaigned through the Queensland Winter Carnival. Residual fitness could have him tuned to fire very, very quickly.

FUTURES: $51 Winx Stakes, $51 Epsom Handicap.

NECTARIS (Seventh, Rosehill Heat 8, 1030m)

Has been away from racing for 10 months and formerly raced in the UK with her three wins occurring between 1400m and 1600m.

The five-year-old only beat one home in a 900m Rosehill trial but she's a sweet mover and James McDonald was aboard for Chris Waller.

That looks a pointer for starters and there's no question the bay had something more to offer in the run home.

Highlights landed the trial six lengths ahead of Nectaris with this imported mare coming home with cruise control turned on.

Nectaris is a daughter of Sea The Moon, sire of Waller's 2022 Caulfield Cup, Newcastle Cup, Wyong Cup winner Durston.

PRE EMINENCE (Last, Rosehill Heat 13, 900m)

Yet to race and on paper his 5.8 lengths last in his only trial hardly looks enlightening.

Don't be fooled, the Gerald Ryan-Sterling Alexiou-trained colt showed talent and tenacity.

This heat contained eight starters and all bar Pre Eminence had previously won as two-year-olds.

Include the likes of Don Corleone, Butch Cassidy and the boom heat winner, Kandinsky Abstract.

Pre Eminence, by Exceed And Excel from French Fern (2016 Group 2 Reisling Stakes), wanted to run faster once Nash Rawiller eased him near last. Nash did get his way!

From the 600m this chestnut did as was required, yet looked more than eager running through the finish.

PRIMO (Won, Rosehill Heat 18, 900m)

Remarque, Makarena and this unraced gelding all chalked impressive Rosehill trial wins for Hawkes Racing.

The four-year-old has yet to race but three effective trials promise a win or two. Or three.

He followed a cruisey second in a Rosehill trial with a storming 900m win, both last February.

Back to trialling last Friday, the son of Sizzling jogged close up then sped home for Zac Lloyd, having plenty of gas in the tank.

Short courses will be Primo's forte, his dam is a half-sister to 2005 Listed Gosford Pacesetter Stakes (1200m) winner Langborghini.

FUTURES: $201 Golden Rose

SEKANI (Second, Rosehill Heat 15, 900m)

He's an unraced Dundeel colt from Honesty Prevails, making him half-brother to Profondo and Custodian.

It costs big dollars to acquire mum's offspring. Profondo fetched $1.9m, Custodian $1.15m and this colt was a $1m Easter Sale yearling.

He's on the improve at the trials, having previously run sixth, then fifth before Friday's second.

One of several trial beauties for Hawkes Racing, this big fellow stoked up with resolve for Zac Lloyd (who must have felt like the kid in the candy store last Friday).

This stable invariably has runners well prepared when back from holidays or making a debut. Sekani will present fit and forward whenever the wraps come off him.

FUTURES: $301 Golden Rose, $201 Cox Plate

SHINZO (Won, Rosehill Heat 2, 900m)

Hasn't the Golden Slipper hero returned a treat!

Okay, the Slipper hoodoo story gets a send around almost every season.

Some youngsters train on, others don't. Simple.

But the ultra-conservative Chris Waller won't force his two-year-olds. It bodes well for yet another one of Snitzel's top triallers.

This colt has been given the least viable number of runs in his first season of racing, yet he won the most important two-year-old race of the season.

He looks set to cement his reputation if Friday's trial is a guide.

Just a magnificient individual, and sensible too, he did J-Mac's bidding then scooted between elders Zaaki and Going Global.

FUTURES: $4.50 Golden Rose, $13 TAB Everest, $51 Cox Plate, $6 Coolmore Stud Stakes, $26 Champions Sprint.
