Tony Brassel's blackbook from last Friday's Randwick and Gosford trials

Spring has just about sprung so we've reached top gear with recent Sydney area trials.

Last Friday a lot of triallers at Randwick and Gosford were hardly subjected to full throttle. I've sifted out many of them below.

We had 14 choice heats at Randwick and the 13 Gosford heats weren't too shabby, either.

Class runners included Ciaron Maher and David Eustace's long-striding Group 1 winner Ruthless Dame and the Group 1-placed Nugget.

Meanwhile at Royal Headquarters, we scrutinised Group 1 winners Alcohol Free, Lion's Roar, Sunshine In Paris along with Serpentine and Tannhauser. And not all of this group went flash.

Covering both the Randwick and Gosford sessions, here's my collection of blackbookers from last Friday.

BAKERLOO (Second, Gosford, Heat 10, 800m)

Like her Group 1 winning sire The Mission (sire of smart Queenslander Yellow Brick), she's trained by Paul Perry. Placed in two of her three runs, she quickened keenly mid-trial. Her neck second to Reigning King was a top launching pad for a provincial maiden.

BASARWA (Fourth, Gosford, Heat 5, 1000m)

Atlante gelding with two Kiwi wins before joining Danny O'Brien's Victorian stable to score at Pakenham (1600m) and Mornington (1600m). Now trained by Kris Lees and wound up late when fourth to stablemate Willinga Beast. Two-time winner first-up.

DEMOCRACY MANIFEST (Sixth, Randwick, Heat 4, 1050m)

Off the scene for a couple of months but he'll probably present trim, taut and terrific for Chris Waller. The barnstormer has strolled around in two August trials, most recently Friday's sixth to slick Tropical Squall. May find others classier in October so set for a succulent task during September.

FUTURES: $26 Epsom Handicap

DREYMON (Second, Gosford, Heat 9, 800m)

Friday's trial was his first time in public and a very tasty effort when beaten by another unraced type, Midnight Opal. Trained at Wyong by Amanda Davis, this Bull Point gelding is from a half-sister to Phobetor (Missile Stakes winner). He sat midfield and responded instantly when given a late rev. Neat trial considering his inexperience.

DUNMORE LASS (Eighth, Gosford, Heat 8, 1200m)

Kristin Buchanan's Dundeel mare is from a half-sister to Group winners Bring Me Roses and Face Value. First time in public she parked rearwards over 800m, then crept home four lengths behind She's A Bad Girl. Dylan Gibbons didn't move on this four-year-old.

EVELYN MAY (Seventh, Randwick, Heat 7, 1050m)

A last start $3.80 second in a Kembla maiden in May. But fancy striking the winner, King Colorado in a maiden! Next start that one landed a Brisbane Group 1. John O'Shea's filly has only raced twice and speared down the outer when seventh in Bravely's trial. This Sacred Falls filly is from a half-sister to Sydney and Melbourne Stakes winner Happy Hippy, plus Kiwi stakes winner Nikita.

FIRST PERSON (Second, Gosford, Heat 11, 1000m)

Good sized filly by All Too Hard and her half-sister Personal landed the 2020 Group 1 VRC Oaks. Last May's game fifth to Zoukerette at Canterbury (1100m) was her only race start for Kris Lees. Three strong trials bode well and she duelled outside the winner Midsummer Night last Friday, looking able to win had Dylan Gibbons been serious.

HALE BOPP (Won, Gosford, Heat 7, 1000m)

Kris Lees gelding now ready for his first start following three above average trials. By Deep Field, his mum is a half-sister to dual Group 1 winner Viddora (Moir Stakes and Winterbottom Stakes). Two rivals had a chop at this rangy chestnut, yet he comfortably saw them off 200m out.

HARVEY‘S WAY (Fifth, Gosford, Heat 3, 1000m)

David Atkins's Adelaide gelding was sidelined for a year before last Friday's bold 1.7 lengths defeat behind Quick Tempo. Last until the bend, he breezed down the outside and can progress from Scone and Newcastle wins in late 2021.

IN MY DREAMS (Second, Randwick, Heat 13, 1050m)

Ex-Mark Newnham filly now in Michael Freedman's Randwick yard. She's a pretty Pariah filly from a half-sister to In Her Time (Group 1 The Galaxy and VRC Lightning Stakes winner). Sole run was a seventh to Hip Hip Hurrah in a Scone stakes race last May. Trialled like a good one before that kick off and Friday's jog for second reinforced that view.

ITHADTOBEZOU (Fifth, Randwick, Heat 11, 740m)

Untested, yet went about her business for a pleasing fifth to Famous Pedrille. Sprinted easily near the rail then coasted. She won 1200m and 1250m races at Canterbury last summer but her grand mum handled Canterbury even better. Trained by John Hawkes, Fine Society won the 2003 Group 1 Canterbury Guineas (1900m), a night meeting.

LIFE OF TREE (Sixth, Randwick, Heat 12, 739m)

By Akeed Mofeed (GB), this colt is an unraced brother to South Aussie Group 3 winner The Amazonian. Baby brother shipped down from Kristin Buchanan's Wyong base to settle last then crank up. Keenan may have beaten him seven lengths but it's more how they trial, rather than finishing position. This guy trialled a treat, for the second time.

NUGGET (Won, Gosford, Heat 1, 1200m)

He's a chunky ball of muscle by Siyouni, just like the French sire's best son, current UK champ Paddington.

Maher-Eustace has guided him to win $1m in earnings Down Under including a Group 1 Doncaster third. Just too classy in a narrow, casual trial win.

FUTURES: $26 Memsie Stakes, $26 Makybe Diva Stakes, $26 Toorak Handicap, $26 King Charles III Stakes, $26 Champions Mile, $15 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes

PANIC (Fifth, Randwick, Heat 9, 1050m)

This Time Test (GB) gelding will be making his racing debut whenever Michael Freedman wheels him out. He's a four-trial veteran and also landed a Randwick 743m heat on August 15. Wide and out for a look behind Royal Tribute last Friday, his mum is a sister to dual Kiwi Group 2 winner Saracino.

PERRI LASS (Fifth, Gosford, Heat 6, 1000m)

This Kris Lees-trained Pierro filly is gearing up for start one following four trials. She's a half-sister to Chris Waller's Sandown and Geelong winner Gabeira. Last until straightening, she strode up the straight with purpose. Good stuff.

RUTHLESS DAME (Sixth, Gosford, Heat 8, 800m)

No classier runner did the rounds at Gosford last Friday. She's winner of Morphettville's Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m), plus a charging second in the Group 1 Surround Stakes (1400m). Eased last early, her trial was a ripper going on the way she jogged along the inside.

FUTURES: $26 Memsie Stakes, $26 Epsom Handicap, $51 TAB Everest, $15 The Invitation, $15 Manikato Stakes, $51 King Charles III Stakes, $26 Golden Eagle
