Toronto Blue Jays vs. San Diego Padres Prediction 7-19-23 MLB Picks

The San Diego Padres and the Toronto Blue Jays meet in MLB interleague action from Rogers Centre on Wednesday. The Padres will look to secure the series win after taking the opener of the set on Tuesday 9-1, in what is the only series between these two teams this season. Let’s dive into the matchup and give out a pick.

San Diego Rights The Ship

The Padres had really come out flat from the all-star break, but turned things around early against the Blue Jays in Tuesday’s win, jumping on Alek Manoah early and then building on the lead against Toronto’s bullpen. In the month of July, the Padres rank 5th in team OPS, 4th in wRC+ and 1st in isolated power. Manny Machado leads the Padres with 18 home runs, while Juan Soto is right behind with 17 home runs along with a team-best 54 RBIs. Fernando Tatis Jr. also has 17 homers of his own, with 49 RBIs as well as a team-best 89 hits and a .284 batting average. The Padres will have a challenge in the form of Jose Berrios on the mound for the Jays, but anything is possible when the Padres’ offense lives up to the hype as we saw on Tuesday, something that we’ve had to call into question for much of the season so far.

Manoah Struggles Again

Alek Manoah had a great start back in the rotation on the road in Detroit, but Tuesday’s start at home resurrected old demons as he got hit early and struggled with control again, and really put the Jays behind the 8-ball from the get-go, to the point that Toronto’s offense couldn’t get going and ended up getting beat down in the series opener. In July, Toronto ranks 12th in team OPS, 15th in isolated power and 8th in wRC+. Bo Bichette leads the Blue Jays with 16 home runs, 128 hits and a .318 batting average while Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has 60 RBIs to lead Toronto in that department. The Blue Jays struggled to plate any offense on Tuesday, but runs should be slightly easier to come by against San Diego’s Yu Darvish, who has a 5.52 ERA on the road this season.

Chris’ Pick

I have to look at the over here. The Padres’ offense has been too good to ignore as of late and Toronto I think will wake up here and be able to get to Darvish. When the bullpens have their say as well I think this is a game that has no problem being higher-scoring and it would’ve been an over on Tuesday as well had Toronto pulled some of their weight. Give me the over here.
